help: seatbelt mechanism broken
Hi Guys
I have this problem in my GTA. The passenger seatbelt mechanism is broken. The plastic cover was torn off from the previous owner perhaps to repair it, but failed. The mechanism is broken because it doesn't tighten the seatbelt at all. Even the accelerometer works very bad, because if you tug the seatbelt nothing happen, it will follow you.
Question is: can you gently tell me the exact part I need to buy brand you? I prefer buying from rockauto.com but whatever site ships in Italy if fine. Im asking you because I'm not an expert in this kind of things.
THANKS
bye

Re: help: seatbelt mechanism broken
The belt should not lock up by yanking on it, it is an inertial lock. The cover is very common to break the tabs off and not hold, the PO may have just removed it.

Re: help: seatbelt mechanism broken
For anyone reading this thread and unfamiliar with the locking method mentioned by Joe Tag.
Ours systems are triggered by the "car's movement" =

Here's what that piece is called. = ( Camaro/Firebird 82-92 Seatbelt Headliner Upper Trim Guide )
Just paste that into the search bar on your computer and hit search.

Re: help: seatbelt mechanism broken
Thanks
I dind't know that thirdgen's have "car's movement" seatbelt triggered
However my problem is that right now all the webbing is extended and loose. It doesn't tighten up AT ALL
A passenger pulled it in order to lock the buckle, but then the webbing didn't come up. It stayed loose.
Now the webbing is dangling.
Very ugly thing. Makes the car looks like a Burkina Faso typical car.
Do I have to change the mechanism or do you think it is just stucked?
THANKS !!!

Re: help: seatbelt mechanism broken
I guess the first thing I would do is use some kind of lubricant. White lithium grease in a spray can with a straw adapter . IMO it does not smell as bad as some solvents but only use a "small" shot. You don't want the inside of the car to smell .
Be sure you protect the headliner from getting any on it with a rag stuffed in there or something of that nature.

Found it! Try this: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...ro-z-28-a.html This is easy to do and it works! Took me 12 minutes to do the passenger side that quit working.

Re: help: seatbelt mechanism broken
I've had the passenger seat belt not want to retract before. I find the trick is to sit in the back seat and reach up with one hand. You should feel a small wheel in there. It feels like a computer mouse scrolling wheel. Try rolling it back and forth with one hand (it may not want to move much), while simultaneously pulling the seatbelt down with the other hand. Use repeated fast pulls on the seatbelt.
It might zip back up right away. It may take about 30 seconds of fiddling before it retracts itself.

Re: help: seatbelt mechanism broken
I had a similar issue, I just replaced my belts with 4th gen belts as they are cheaper to find and are a better design. They don't have the bottom retractor like the 1982 cars. The only thing is that you would have to remove the bottom retractor cover from the old belts and just glue it on the sill plate and also you would just have to unbolt the bracket that the bottom retractor bolts to. As far as the top mounting, everything is exactly the same. But basically once you remove that bottom bracket, its is an exact bolt up. good luck if you go this route.
NOS belts are expensive and will fail again, just a matter of time.

Re: help: seatbelt mechanism broken
ebay, trans am creations usa, hawks third gen, moderndaymuscle, I beleieve classic industries also offers seatbelts, just not sure about the colors. Best to stick with factory stuff.

Re: help: seatbelt mechanism broken
These belts are a "direct bolt-in" design that converts the OE Dual Retractor Belt to the preferred Direct Fit Single Retractor Set Up like the 4th generation cars had.
Hope this information is helpful to those of you who require new belts and are looking for a solution.

Re: help: seatbelt mechanism broken
So theres no confusion by what i meant, i meant factory colors not factory belts (my bad). If classic offers them in factory colors then by all means... Newer is probably better with seatbelts. Based off the pic they look to be the right color
