need advice on rip in seat

my seats in my 89 firebird are in excellent shape, except for a big'ol rip in the passenger seat.
are there any places that sell the oem style fabric so I could have just that section of seat repaired? or maybe just one seat cover for sale?
Should I try a wtb ad here and see if somebody has a good piece of fabric they would sell me?
I really hate to buy a whole new set of seat covers just because of this one tear

I think the color is "saddle tan"?

Re: need advice on rip in seat

These guys have rolls of the original pallex cloth if you wanted to have it redone.

Probably easier and cheaper to just find a nice seat though. Grey was super common, shouldn't be hard to find.

Re: need advice on rip in seat

the color is actual "beachwood tan" like in this auction here,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/82-92-Firebird-Camaro-Rear-Seat-Bottom-Beechwood-Tan-Interior-OEM-GM-Trans-Am-/321549485131?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4addd7c44b

I will give the sms site a try and see if I can get a sample.

Re: need advice on rip in seat

Buy one yard, get an upholstery shop to fit it in, and that will be what you need. If you order covers from any where else, it will be velour, not pallex cloth, and you'll have to replace every seat to get them all to matxh

Either that, or put out a call for somebody that has the seat bottom you can just buy.

Re: need advice on rip in seat

Good point about the velour. I didn't realize nobody is making seat covers with the pallex material. that blows.
I've got a pallex sample coming from sms.
thanks guys!

Re: need advice on rip in seat

look again. they offer three kinds of seat sets now. Vinyl, encore velour, and regal velour. No pallex cloth is listed.

They used to offer that, but their supplier, PUI, stopped offering the pallex cloth, so it's no longer available

If you do find an old page for it, it will say OUT OF STOCK, which means unavailble

Trust me, if it was available through the normal channels, I wouldn't be spending $800 to have new seats made

Re: need advice on rip in seat

its been awhile now since I put in a sample request to the SMS website and nothing yet. I also called and left a message.
A search came up with a place called the "Larry Dennis Co."
I'll give them a call tommorow.

what about this ebay auction? it says its pallex.
anybody know anything about them?

The eBay link doesn't have pallex. They got their fabric from PUI, who doesn't make it anymore

Re: need advice on rip in seat

aha! Thank you.
who'da thought pallex would be so elusive. so many gm cars in the 80's and 90's had it. I would be ok with just switching to velour, but I didn't want to do my door panels to match.

Re: need advice on rip in seat

I got my sample from SMS in.
it looks to be a perfect match, yayy!!!
I'm going to order enough to do both front seat bottoms.
Would anyone know if one yard is enough for that?

One yard of pallex is 60" by 36", so I would image it would be enough

Thank you 58mark!
You've been hella helpful!

I'll post a before and after pic when I'm finished.

one last quick question...
I'm going to replace my carpet while I got the seats out.
What would be the closest match from acc carpet? I'm assuming it would be "Caramel"?

Classic Industries does offer a reproduction Pallex material for 1985-88 Firebird that is close in color, grain and texture to the original materials. We currently list these colors and applications in our catalog. The reproduction material currently offered in our catalog is, in our opinion, the closest in the marketplace to original. However, it is not exact. Shades of color may differ very slightly. But grain and texture is very, very close. These listings, manufactured by PUI, are as follows:

1985-87 Firebird
F10085601 Two-Tone Reproduction Pallex 1985-86 Firebird w/split rear seat
F10087001 Mono-Tone Reproduction Pallex 1987 Firebird w/split rear seat

1988 Firebird
F10088001 Mono-Tone Reproduction Pallex 1988 Firebird w/solid rear seat

We also have another supplier that can offer us a reproduction Pallex material that is a little different than the material PUI offers. This other material is also very close to the original material in grain and texture (although not as close as the PUI material) and the colors are also very close to original.

The application listings from this other supplier are a little different than the PUI listings as well. These listings specify that the application for their patterns fit 1985-92 Firebird with two choices of rear seat option... solid or split rear seat.

Plans are to add these new listings to our Firebird offering in the near future in order to round out our listings to include patterns for 1989-92 models.

The question I would pose to the forum members is whether or not the pattern is the same for all 1985-92 models with Pallex seat option (with the exception of two-tone or mono-tone covers and split or solid rear seats). We are still researching this issue.

If anyone here has information to share regarding the seat patterns/vehicle applications, we would welcome it.

Re: need advice on rip in seat

what would be really nice is if seat covers where made with the actual palex, just say'in.
The material I got from SMS is pretty much spot-on. I will post a picture tommorow.

speakin of pictures, 58mark, I clicked on your pic to try and zoom in on the material, and then got noisy and looked at your other pics. You got one very nice place!
I showed the heart-shaped bath tub to my ol'lady and now she wants one, lol

Re: need advice on rip in seat

I had it done local at a place called color match auto interiors.
I dropped off the material and just the seat bottom and they charged me $195. I could have had other places do it for less, but I've had these guys do some other stuff for me and the quality of their work is second to none. and they had it done less than 24 hours later.
if all the rest of my seats weren't so nice, I would've just spent the money to find a set of gta or trans am leather/lumbar seats and recovered them. but I'm ok with having a super nice set of the plain Jane cloth seats.

And you and the shop are where?
Good upholstery shops are hard to find, just trying to help others in your area?
Perhaps you could fill out your profile?

Not sure I would ever do business with SMS again, they sent me a sample to match the interior of my black 88 IROC, what they sent was one for a blue IROC. NOT PLEASED AT ALL BY THEIR SERVICES. Would go with someone else.
