Hey guys,

Re-upholstering my headliner. Found a small area of surface rust on the roof panel steel. Would just sand it off and paint it but it goes under the piece of stamped metal going horizontally across the front of the roof. I was thinking a rust converter is my only option. Always heard POR-15 is the best option.
Any thoughts?
Is there a less expensive option to POR-15?

In that situation I would use the rust converter. POR 15 is great, but really only good for places where there's no paint left. It doesn't bond well to the paint surrounding the surface rust, so the rust just bubbles under it. Plus trying to brush it on the ceiling it's just going to drip off. Just sand as much as you can off, then use the rust converter, then primer, then topcoat. If you still have your interior in, make sure you put down some drop cloth.

I had exactly the same problem.

Well, I gave a quick sanding to the areas that I was able to sand. Then applied several layers of CRC rust convert. And yes, there are areas between 2 sheets of metal that you can't easily work on. I decided to spray Dinitrol rust proofing cavity wax in there. And I also decided to rub some wax on the black areas that rust convert had taken care of.
After this I didn't feel any need to paint the roof panel steel.

I ended up lightly sanding the rust them using Loctite Extend Rust Converter. Worked well and seems very durable.
