Painting Plastics

Well i have decided that i want to go all black interior on my 82 z. My interior is grey, going to die my carpet black. and im wanting to paint all my plastics from the stock grey to black.. ive did a little research on painting the plastics, and heres what i have gotton, thought about hitting them with 1000 grit to rough it up also... 2-3 cans of the SEM Gloss Black http://www.tcpglobal.com/itemdetail....no=SEM%2015233And a quart of the plastic prep
http://www.tcpglobal.com/itemdetail.aspx?itemno=SEM%2038354

is this a good product? anyone ever used the gloss black?

Re: Painting Plastics

If you are looking for something closer to the original sheen, you should go with Landau black. The gloss black is going to be a lot shinier then the original panels.

Re: Painting Plastics

I love SEM's products, but the high gloss black doesn't look right on interior panels, IMHO, I prefer the landau black. It looks like factory black. The gloss look like it was spray painted.
The prep is a good idea. I do have a tip for you before you start. Wash the panel in Windex 3 or 4 times. The Windex will pull the oils like armorall and such out (a gal of Windex is a lot cheaper than prep products), then sand, then prep, then paint. start with light coats of color.

Good luck and post plenty of pics!

Re: Painting Plastics

You will probably need at least 4 cans. Here is how I prepped my plastics. I used simple green degreaser, as it is fairly strong and pulled off all of the grease and oils. I used a scotchbrite pad to scrub them to deep clean the panels, and rough up the surface for paint. Then I used bulldog adhesion promoter on the panels, followed by 3 light coats of paint. Since you are looking to do a color change, you may need more coats.

Re: Painting Plastics

I agree with all that everyone posted above. You may want to see my thread here on restoring interior plastics and carpets, with pics. I think I used about 4 cans total as well:

Re: Painting Plastics

I'm interested in seeing this completed. Can you post some before and after shots along with your thoughts on how it looks up close and personal?
Thanks!

Here's shots of my project, using SEM paints. I used almost 6 cans and paid about $13.00 each:

Depends on your budget. POR15 works good, but pricey. Eastwood make some stuff just like POR15, cheaper.
http://www.eastwood.com/rust-encapsulator-28601.html

If it is just light surface rust, wire wheel it real good and brush on some 9.00 qt of walmart Rustoleum.

EDIT: I know OT, but if you haven't found good doors yet, I saw 3 3gs at Knoxville Pull A Part last time I was up there. Not sure how far you are, but thought I would mention it.

Re: Painting Plastics

Well after i completely got my interior out.The car is really solid..... for the most part.......... real busy weekend so didnt get much done. Today i hit them with the wire wheel. and what did i find? Rust!. ..i couldnt believe what i found. i noticed 4 or 5 little rust holes on the passenger side. under the dash. same on the drivers but not as bad .. this kills me.. i have the interior completely out and everything else looks great surprisingly..what is the best was to fix this.. . SEM paint hasn't came in. really dont matter tho, i have to get this fixed before i do anything else. whats yal's thoughts how bad is this. the rest of the car looks great will make more pics later its wet and nasty here.
