I can't really tell what I'm looking at, but I just ordered a new pull down Monday as mine was missing essential parts. I should get it soon. If it helps I'll take some pictures and post them on this thread if you don't get an answer.

Re: hatch power pull down... what am i missing?
I just put in my hatch pull down. I can't really relate what I see in your pictures but maybe these pictures will help.
I had some wires branch in two directions. One bunch into a harness that plugged into the plastic housing of the pull down and another couple leading to my light. The bottom right was a relay on the same set of wires that I replaced. I don't know what it was to though.
Those wires in the middle of my pull down were just part of the whole thing by itself. They ran from the plastic housing into the locking mechanism if I remember correctly.
The harness on the right plugged into the spot right above the silver motor. The one on the left was the one that went to my light. The single black wire behind all of that was just the ground.
You can see better where they split here. You can also see the relay. I'm not sure what that as for because my motor ran even with it out.
This is for a 1992 firebird. They aren't all the same but hopefully this might help.

Re: hatch power pull down... what am i missing?
What the OP needs is a striker-sensing switch. It contains all the wiring for the 1986-87 or 88-91 pull-down unit. In his case the blue wire would plug into the large white connector on the red/white stripe wire. Connect the ground to the body ground location below the pull-down unit's frame, then plug the white 4-wire plug into the reversing switch and attach the switch portion to the striker with a hex-head screw. Plug in a hatch pull-down relay into the socket. I normally stock both the 87-88 and 88-91 versions, but I am out of stock at the moment.

^ now thats who i was praying would chime in... from what i read you are the absolute guru on the power hatches for these cars... from what i see of that sensing switch i actually have some of that harness, think you could give me a couple good links showing and describing what it should look like in an 86?... thank you btw man!... and i was already eyeballing the relay switch from top-down i'd love to support TGO members businesses... and question, what does that relay switch do and why does the one member above not have one and it still work?
Also click on the picture in the link I provided for a larger picture of the switch and wiring.

Re: hatch power pull down... what am i missing?
The posts of a 91.5-92 pull-down unit are of no help for your application. They pull-down units are COMPLETLY different. You can use a 1988-91 version also by cutting off the small black connector on the blue wire and swapping it for the larger white connector yours needs. They are otherwise identical. I'll dig around and see if I can find any striker-sensing switches I can refurbish and put in stock. I've been too busy lately to visit the pick-a-part yards for old switches to refurbish.
Also click on the picture in the link I provided for a larger picture of the switch and wiring.

Re: hatch power pull down... what am i missing?
hi guys, my pull down unit is stuck in the down position even though the hatch is open. This has happned to me several times in years past, but I forgot how I tricked it into coming back up again. Anyone?

i think you just trip the switch where it latches and it should cycle back up.

thanks for the great pics...as people always cant find the striker switch if things get screwed up and the units in the down position with it unlatched (lost power etc) now we can point them to this pic and even circle it!
gawsh that would have helped me 2 years ago.

Lonsal, you are 100% correct, sprayed it w WD40 and let it sit overnight. When I came out in the AM it worked.
