I Will be buying a 5 inch autometer tach soon and looking for idea's on were to mount and would love to see yours. So if you got pics lets seem them. This post is to show off your tachs. .

NO NEED TO DRILL any holes anyplace. you can Mt the tach using factry Holes. just take a few mins and think about how you want to Mt the tach

exmpl: if you mt tach on top of Dash use the factry holes to mt the tach strap to
(tach strap. you will have to make this part. $5.00 at home depo)
RUNS ACROSS DASH pad jets out 1 1/2 inch from dash. folding back under and using
dash pad screws to hold in place.

the pics below show a hand full of gauges, all mts used factry holes, not one was drilled.
all could be removed. and you would never tell they had been in the car.

then to swap tachs just remove the bezle bolt (at bottom and swap) after all ya never know what one you will like?

white z that looks very good. I'm thinking of mounting a 5 inch tach on top of the steering colume. My question is will it fit? Any one have pics of this?

I had a 5" tach and help it on the colume and I did nto see any wahy it would fit there. In fact I did nto see a spot anywhere I liked and since I'm trying to stay mostly stock looking I sold the tach to my buddy.

Would love for it to be under the center vents, but the PO already put an Air/Fuel ratio gauge there... And putting a tach there would just be kind of silly looking. So I drllled a couple of holes in the a-pillar plastic, put a couple of gromets between the mount and the a-pillar and tightened the two screws down. I figure that a-pillar plastic piece will be a dime a dozen if I ever want to go back to stock.



In the pic i have the tach's shift light attached... but I removed it and got the one in my dash working. It's where the cigarette lighter is. And you can see the useless AFR gauge.... but no matter what gauge I put there, there will eitehr be a gauge or a hole in that spot, and I don't want to put a tach in front of it.

Also, the location of the tach there is great. It doesnt block much if any vision around the a-pillar, as it's not really much wider than the a-pillar from there, and it's VERY visible. I dont have to look down under the dash to see my RPM's, it's right there near where I'm looking down the road. My only issue now is as much as i like my shift light stealth'd into the dash in place of hte cig lighter, I dont like it being so far away from the tach.

nice pics everyone. Now I'm in a tuff spot. Now I don't know if I like it on the a piller driverside or the passenger side. They both seem nice areas. The passenger side is out of any view which is cool.

some do it because they want looks. Some want a more accurate rpm tach. In my case my tach just died and I always wanted an autometer 5 inch tach.

well then couldnt you put a aftermarket tach in the stock location with minor fabing?

I have an entire custom gauge cluster that will be replacing my stock gauges, so I will only have one tach at that time.


Accuracy and a shift light are two other reasons to have one...

People REALLY overestimate the accuracy of the stock tach. Both the 82-89 and 90-92 ones are prone to serious accuracy issues. I always thought my tach was fine but turns out it reads about way higher than it should. My autometer tach says 2000 RPMs and the stock tach will say 3000-3500 RPMs. The error, of course, gets worse the higher you go, and it's those high RPMs you want to be careful about it. And personally I use my tach as a speedo since I have a manual. I know the gear ratios in each gear etc.

Also, there's no easy way to just "slightly fab" an aftermarket tach into the stock location. I've seen it done on Firebirds and it looked great, but for Camaros there's no good solution that doesn't involve fabricating a whole new panel and replacing every gauge.

The stock tachometers are PAINFULLY inaccurate and slow. When I put the pedal to the metal my tach says I'm at 7000rpm before I'm even out of gear (which is ludicrous with this engine). I have an automatic, so I don't NEED a better tach, but if i install an aftermarket shifter, like a B&M Megashifter, and i want to shift manually while racing, I want to know what rpms I'm doing. The reason why many tachometers are outside the original gauge cluster, is because many times the whole gauge cluster is actually one piece.

What would be the purpose of that? You have an automatic with a stock shifter. Sounds like something I'd see in a Honda.

I'd find a way to fix the factory one. It's not like you need to rely on it to shift. Besides, your interior is in great shape. I'd hate to see you ruin it with a gaudy tach.

I will be installing a b&m megashifter with a transgo kit soon. That's another reason for me to throw in a tach. Plus my little brother loves them.

From what I can tell there's a band-aid fix for the 90-92 tachs, but it's temporary at best. The underlying problem causing the drift is still there somewhere. I dont know about hte 82-89 Camaro tachs, and I know zilch about the firebird tachs.

Sometimes it's just important to have an accurate tach and there's not always a good way to integrate it into the dash. One day I'd like to make a custom gauge cluster of all autometer or some other quality brand of accurate gauges. Would be espeically cool if I could figure out a way to keep the stock glass window over my gauge cluster but Im pretty sure that's nearly impossible to do.

well i will be adding a aftermarket tach, in my 92, in the stock location. auto meter carbon series. either it will sit behind the clear factory plastic or it will slightly protrude through it, not sure yet, but i WILL be in the factory location, i know what the factor gauges pod l;ooks like . its very simple , a good days worth of fabing, wiring and sodering ,... but it will look great. but at that point you might as well just do all of the gauges.

does anyone know of a 4 inch pedestal mounted tach? it seems all 4 inch tachs are in dash only so im in the middle of this problem I wanted the 5 inch but mounting in a bird is kinda hard. I would put it on the passanger side by the ac vent but that's kinda out of my vision. I really wanted to mount one just over the stock RPM gauge and call it a day but really don't want to step down the the 3/34 size.

I made a better mount than this but you get the idea where and how it looks.Just some abs plastic..a lil heat and patience.My factory tach is clearly not accurate but i just got around to fixing it recently.Shift light will be made eventually using the factory clusters upshift indicator in the idiot lights.

I need to take new pics of the tach but its clean looking imo

Now that does not look bad at all-nice job. I have always loved the 5" tach's with the big shift light on the side, but they have to be mounted in the right location or they just look crappy.

Thanks,I agree the 5"tachs had always had the big shift lights and alot of them came this way..but around here for a street car to have that big a tach mounted above the dash pad and with that very bright shift light is one hell of a heat score and I used to get pulled over more than I could stand.

I sat in the car one day and just held the tach in hand and went kept moving around going hmmm whereee can I stick this in lol.The abs plastic somewhat matshes the texture of the original black plastic so many people dont notice it.Ill Take a better pic of it shortly.

There are good options to mount it..just think outside the box..at the worst you waste a sheet or two of cheap plastic till you get it right and not ruin the car is what I thought is best.

well I just ordered my 5 inch autometer tach. I had no idea it may get you into trouble with the law. I do drive this car on the street a lot. I better mount it below the dash pad. I have ac so I better find a spot were its not blocking the air vent. I will post pics up when it comes in.

i dont see the point of having an aftermarket tach AND your FACTORY tach, duplicate guages dont make sence to me, its lik ur oil psi water and volts, y jave aftermarket if ur car has them already? ok theyre not acurate enough u say? remove them and mak a custom cluster, duplicates look guady imo

by the way I just finished installing my mega shifter and really love it. My current tach is dead. I've alwayed loved the aftermarket 5 inch tachs. Everyone has there own taste.

Dont think your being rude at all no worries.Its a legit question,I get asked about it as Im sure others do aswell.For me..not speaking for others but the firebird cluster is one piece,removing just the tach isnt an option.Since all my other factory gauges work fine..I dont want to replace the entire panel due to that 1 faulty gauge.And I do agree it can be gaudy to a degree but at this point Im looking more at function of a accurate tach.Mounting mine where and how I did was an attempt to take away some of that gaudy look.Vice versa even if I removed the factory tach and put just my autometer in there ..to me would seem just as bad lol.Just my opinion for my car.

Formula forever: In some places no there is some stupid laws of not being able to have things mounted on the dash or even the windshield that may or may not obstruct the drivers view.Having gotten several warnings in the past about my tach dash mount made me look for alternatives.Would like to see where you place yours for new ideas

well the tach just came in the mail today. I ordered this of ebay but this tach is vintage old. it has 3 wires instead of 4 wires. Im not sure how to wire these old tachs up. 2 black wires and one red. what gives.

Best to get the model number and google the wiring for the tach.Havent seen a autometer that had only 3 wires so I dont know if it is missing anything unless that tach is strictly for a v8 signal then all you need is tach signal/power/ground.

How do you plan on mounting it?

Thanks man! It's all custom. Simply cut out a piece the exact size as the original piece. After that we did several layouts on there to figure out how we would place them. I did also add LED's for the turn signals/bright indicator/and brake on(also works off of my line-loc). After that it was just a lot of wiring. Luckily I didn't need any special adapters as the T56 is electronic so it works with my electric speedometer.

Not pictured is my AFR gauge that is roll-bar mounted to the left.

Here is an update on mine, i am putting this tach on the dash soon, it is an incredibly rare vintage sun "super" tach from the 1960's and its in mint condition, its rare because of the 10,000 rpm red line, I think it will be awesome when i mount it for real

The post is about the gauges BUT.......
What's going on with that steering wheel? Carbon fiber, two push buttons, red center tape..... The shift light says 1/4 mile, the red tape... autocross??
Then there are those switches down on the right.....
....where did the wheel come from? or did it fall off a race car and you adapted ...LOL

The steering wheel is a Sparco. It used to be blue, but I painted it black. The switches are(from left to right)(not used yet/2-step/fan).

The button on the center console is a line-loc and the LED on the console is going to be used to let me know when the meth kit is active.
