Rivets on power window motor
I'm getting ready to do the manual to power window conversion (if anyone has a really good thread for this let me know, I havent found any) and I was wondering when you put the rivets into the regulartors if a threaded 1/4"-20 rivet gun would work and if I need any other pieces to do the rivets. I have the rivets these(http://www.ebay.com/itm/370592502487...84.m1439.l2649) but to put these in dont I need another piece that those go into? All the 1/4" rivet guns that I see are threaded ends so it's confusing me some.

Re: Rivets on power window motor
they may have threaded ends so you can install adapters for the slammer 1/8 and 3/16 rivets, but thats all.,

So I should be fine with the threaded rivet gun? Says its 1/4"-20. I dont know why this confuses me but maybe im thinking about it to hard.

Re: Rivets on power window motor
I just put small 10mm bolts in place of the rivets with lock washers. Never had an issue ever

Re: Rivets on power window motor
The rivet gun should look like this:
They are not threaded, it works just like a normal rivet gun - just bigger.
Adapters can be used with a smaller rivet, but the torque from the power window motor over time is not kind to them.
Do you have the factory wiring for these?
What are you going to do with the holes in the door panels left from the window cranks?
Are you going to cut the console for the switches, or do you have a different console?
It really isn't too hard to do.
If you have any questions - just ask?

Re: Rivets on power window motor
I just used a $9.99 rivet gun and the biggest cheap rivet that fit with a #4-6 washer for the back side to beef up the hole coverage. worked just as well as the fancy monster they want you to use.

Re: Rivets on power window motor
Sometimes the biggest cheap rivet that fits may not last the longest.
Sometimes.
I have always used this type of gun.
GM says to use this rivet, it requires this gun.
If GM could of gone cheaper, do you think they would of?
I have never had a problem.
I have seen doors with rounded out holes, because they used steel rivets or nuts and bolts.
It is actually worse on the 4th gens with the fiberglass/plastic doors.
I hope yours lasts

Re: Rivets on power window motor
I say go with some bolts and lock washers. I did and guess what? the regulator spring fell out somehow and I have to take the regulator and motor out again and reinstall it! Glad I only bolted it in cuz if I had to go back and grind rivets off, I would be quite upset.
Bolts and lock washers are much more forgiving and chances are you already have the correct tools
