Very jumpy 1984 Camaro speedometer needle

When I first got my 84 Camaro the speedometer ticked/squeaked really bad so I replaced the speedometer cable with a brand new ACDelco one. With the old speedo cable the speedometer needle was wobbly, hovering up and down in a 5 mph radius over the speed I was actually going. However, after I replaced my speedometer cable it got much worse. Now it wobbles about 10 mph in each direction around my actual speed. I also hear ticking sound from time to time. (MUCH quieter than before) I have read various posts about speedometer problems and how either replacing the cable or lubricating it usually fixes the problem. I'm wary because I have a brand new cable. I don't think its a lubrication problem because the needle seems to be wobbling 'loosely' instead of jumping because the speedo cable is choppy.

Could this be a problem with the needle or speedometer not the cable?

Thanks!

FYI: While replacing the speedo cable I was playing around with the needle and noticed that when I poked it it was very loose feeling, it didn't give any resistance unlike the needle on the gas gauge. Is this normal?

EDIT: Today the speedometer needle isn't working at all. Most of the time it isn't moving and sometimes it randomly crawls up to around 25 mph when I am going about 50. There is a loose-sounding clicking noise coming from the speedometer. I guess it is something to do with the needle... I really hope I don't have to replace the gauge. =\

UPDATE: The check engine light comes on after about 2 minutes of driving on a highway/straight road. It will stay on until I come to a complete stop then it may or may not come back on.

A wobbly needle and be very worrysome and often hard to fix. I was able to find a brand new OE 145 speed and it wobbled as well even after lubing and tightening the speedo cable. But what you are describing is definitely not normal.

If it is within your budget, check out Speedhut.com. They have replacement speedos that you can customize to look just like the original. You can even get a GPS speedo (it is in my cart right now just waiting on a few more $ to come in for a full cluster re-do).

So today I took out the instrument cluster, removed and reconnected the speedo cable at the cluster and now the speedometer works perfectly. I guess I just installed it wrong the first time. Soooo I feel kinda stupid but atleast my speedometer works!
