Re: adding power windos and locks

swapping all the stuff can be done . it's a pretty big chore , very labor intensive . a much easier way is to ck. out "SPAL" for their conversion kits . my present car has a kit from them . works good , looks almost like stock . they also have very good instructions . whatever you do , good luck .

Re: adding power windows and locks

I did the conversion on my 84 TA, windows, locks and mirrors. It is really not that bad of a job to do. The two hardest things for me was getting the windows lined up( to close right) and cutting the holes in the console for switches. It took me two days.

Re: adding power windos and locks

I know this might sound stupid, but tis there any way to have power windows, but still have the crank handle on there that spins? I hate not having power windows, but I want it to look as close to original as possible. I've seen a few of these kits, and they don't seem to bad!

Re: adding power windos and locks

I would think that the easiest way would be to find a junkyard car that has everything you want and swap the parts and wiring over.

chevydrvr: Are you thinking hidden switches? Having the crank handles spinning by themselves would be hilarious. Don't think it would work, but i'd like to see it. And it might be useful, too - if you want to wake up a sleeping passenger, you can whack him in the leg with the crank handle with the push of a button.

Re: adding power windos and locks

I got everything off ebay, even the wiring. I bought new motors, switches and lock actuators (did not want to use old ones). You have to change regulators to power setup, no crank handle on them. I did get the new switches from classic industries.
With the power locks you can put a aftermarket remote door opener on the setup. The one I bought cost 29.00.
It cost me more for L&R power mirrors than the power window and lock setup.
I also ran a seperate power setup. I installed a relay and fuse near the battery and ran the power line into the car. The reason for the relay is because I wanted to have the windows work only when the car is running. The locks I ran from constant power from fuse box, you need that for the remote locks to work.

They have these kits! specifically for older cars like bel airs where you puth the crank handle down or up a bit to move the window up or down. the same company sells smoke screen kits and flame thrower kits, Im pretty damn sure its auto-loc or something like that.

Re: adding power windos and locks

I looked up autoloc, and they do have window crank switches! They would be perfect, as long as I could somehow wire in a third switch for the driver to operate the passenger window. Those switches are $100 each though. Kinda steep for me.

Re: adding power windos and locks

I work for a hotrod shop and when we add power windows to older cars we always buy this kit from AutoLoc for powered windows. its pretty much a switch behind your window crank, the only fall back is when people get in and try and roll your windows down ive seen people twist the arms off. But if your interested check it out

Re: adding power windows and locks

Sorry for diggin this thread up, but I don't want to add yet another "adding power windows" thread.

For those that have added kits or oem, what do you do for the hole in the door panel where the old window crank was? Are you getting an OEM door panel one as well? In my search for a new car, I'm now realizing that there were lots of different styles of interior door panels, so that doesn't seem likely.

Re: adding power windos and locks

Find the oem circle plugs for them. I have two sets from an 81 firebird, different color bird but fit right into the hole where the handle was. You can find them for like 15 bucks.

Re: adding power windos and locks

Ok, thanks. I didn't realize the stock p/w cars had a plug; figured they'd have a hole-less door panel.

I think some of the earlier cars had plugs in the panels. My 82 does. My 88 did not. I went the other way on my 82, swapped over to manual stuff. Couldn't stand the slow windows, plus it's a drag car and weight=ET. I had an 83 that I converted to power (windows, locks, mirrors, pull down hatch). Was plug and play with factory parts.

Re: adding power windos and locks

If the door panel is carpeted, it's really easy to make a plug.the carpet fibers make it very hard to see if you fit it right. You can use a piece from a bad panel or one of your carpet edges that are unseen under the trim.
