ABS headliner + overhead console
hey guys, im in the process of installing my overhead console in my car with an ABS t-top headliner,
i want to start by saying my headliner is uncovered i just painted it to match my interior(and i love it with the tops off)
they provide cutouts for an overhead console, the ovals in the middle are perfect(but im making mine slightly wider to see if it fixes my current problem), but the rectangle you must cut towards the front is too small by a longshot(its the right size for the fiberboard headliners)
i had to cut that rectangle about 1/4 inch wider on each side and extend the front about 1/4 inch to make it fit normally
my console now mounts pretty nicely up on the roof and looks pretty decent up there(i just have to adjust the gap on the pass side because it looks funky)
i will take pictures tomorrow when i go back out to wire it up

Re: ABS headliner + overhead console
theres what it looks like so far, ill try to get better pics of the hole you must cut and try to get the dome area more flush with the headliner, but i think it looks pretty good like it is

Re: ABS headliner + overhead console
You did an ACE job putting the ABS in!!
So where your over-head console is at, is it indented for clips // hangers?
We don't have the over-head console, just the ol' dome light.
Seeing how good a job you did, now I may have to do some O.T. and get the ABS, maybe even search for the console thing--that looks sharp!!

the headliner only took minor cutting for it to fit on my car, but it will be different on every thirdgen due to body flex over years
the overhead console was extremely easy to install, the headliner has pre marked holes to cut(but i had to cut mine a bit bigger than was marked) and the holes for the mounting screws are pre drilled at the factory,
i just took down my old dome light, took out the headliner, made my cuts(about a dozen times trying to get the holes big enough) then mounted it back up and wired it, slid everything in to place and thats how you see it now lol
the part i love the most about my headliner is i dont have to worry about material sag when my tops are off and im going 70 down the beltway
oh yeah, my wife bought my headliner for me for our 1 year anniversary(shes a great wife i know lol) last year, she got it from Ecklers, but if i would have known she was ordering it i would have told her year one has a better price, and im sure theres even better ones(she paid 250 shipped Uncovered, which is way high compared to what year one sells them for)
hope some others on here like my work!!!
i also used some adhesion promoter, then sprayed my headliner with vinyl/Fabric spray from pep boys(it matched my interior surprisingly well) i used the vinyl/fabric spray because i could not find plastic spray that matched my interior close enough(i also shot my sail panels and visors so they would match as close as possible)

Re: ABS headliner + overhead console
the paint is actually vinyl and Fabric paint, i just took a piece of the trim in to pep boys and matched it, they didnt have any plastic paint that matched my gray
then i bought some adhesion promoter, spray one nice coat of adhesion promoter and a few coats of the vinyl and fabric paint, turned out nice
if you do end up getting one,the fit is not good at all out of the box because not very many of these cars are perfectly straight after years of use, and the holes for the sunvisor mounts are way off
the best advice i have is to have patience, if you have to test fit it 10000000000 times, just keep at it, i know i pulled mine in and out of the car a ton because i only cut away a little at a time until it fit nicely

Re: ABS headliner + overhead console
I love it, its amazing quality, just sucks that none of these cars are going to be close to the mold they used(some people will get lucky and have everything line up perfect), the holes for my visors are way way off, but its not a huge issue
other than that i love having no worries of my headliner sagging or ripping, and it really does fit and look nice

Re: ABS headliner + overhead console
Is the material soft or more hard the interior plastics?

Re: ABS headliner + overhead console
its ABS plastic so its very strong but also flexible, it comes rolled in a box half its size
im not a big fan of vinyl headliners, my buddy has it in his fox, but if you wanna give it a shot, it would be interesting to see

Re: ABS headliner + overhead console
Are you saying that the ABS headliner had holes already cut in it for the overhead console and you just enlarged them? I have the overhead console in my 92 t-top camaro and have been ready for a headliner for awhile. I do not have the sun visors since I removed them and rear seatbelts since I have 3-point harnesses so these areas will not affect me if they don't line up. I want it to look good with the t-tops off as I hardly ever have them on.
What tool did you use to cut the ABS material? I just checked the Eckler's website and it does not show the cut-outs for the overhead console. Could you post a link for where to order one with cut-outs?

Re: ABS headliner + overhead console
The holes are not cut for the overhead console, but they are marked clearly so it is easy to cut, I cut them on the lines but had to re cut them a little bigger to make the console fit nicely
The sunvisor mount holes are pre cut and did not align at all with my mounting holes
I used a black and decker RTX with a dremel cutoff wheel attached
I believe my wife ordered from the ecklers catalog, what you see in the pic is what you get
I don't think it looks bad at all with the tops off, but it definitely doesn't look like a regular headliner would, I'll take pics next time I'm with my car
