best T-top headliner

I'd just like some feedback from people that have replaced there headliners.

Who did you buy from and how is the product.

thanks

Re: best T-top headliner

From what I understand, the other aftermarket replacement option is the ABS plastic one and it fits like ****, which is why I refuse to buy it. I'm just going to try and find a stock headliner that has the backboard in decent shape and recover it.

Re: best T-top headliner

The fit of the ABS one is definatly not worth its price. I have one in my car and Ive installed a few in others cars. I had to do a lot of work fitting it just right to look good. Even still some of the gaps are bigger than the stock piece. It is nice for durability though. I think youd be hard pressed to find a good stock backer board.

Re: best T-top headliner

sounds like damned if you do--damned if you don't

Even if you want to stay stock, for fit issues....what do you do about a new board?

Re: best T-top headliner

I too am at this point, but luckily mine is just the fabric drooping, so i can just take it and have it recovered.

I have not been able to find anyone who makes the ACTUAL board, just ABS crap.

Re: best T-top headliner

i got mine from stockinteriors.com. it fits awsome except it doesn't have all the stock mounts so it sags a little in the middle but it won't take much to fix that.

Re: best T-top headliner

I bought the entire kit from hawks,(headliner, sail panels, and visors). I am very pleased with it the headliner and its abs. The only complaint i have is the visors are thicker than oem, and dont seem to snug up to the headliner as well as original. As far as the headliner itself it fits great and looks great. My fabris was drooping also but when i took the liner out even though i was careful the cardboard broke so it was junk.

Re: best T-top headliner

So glad I have an overhead console. Keeps mah headliner alive! But yea, seems there's only one headliner/sail panel replacement, and they both suck. (Sail panels attach with VELCRO. Really? Yes. Really.) I guess the carpets and seat covers are primo quality though.

Re: best T-top headliner

I bought mine through classic industries, my dad AND brother got one for their Trans Ams as well, and they fit perfectly. They look very sharp and minus the above-head accessories offered on 86's, they pop right in. I think they ran like $170

Re: best T-top headliner

when i baught my car it had the abs headliner in it already and also the abs sail panals. he gave me the original sails with the car and the aftermarket visors...he must have baught that hole kit.

well he never put the visors up because the headliner board was short on passanger side and the hole where the visor screws in was in the wrong spot... i had to spend an hour of cutting and fittin but it works and looks nice. as long as the t-tops are on you can notice that its a little short.

the abs sails look nice but dont have the original clips so they dont stay so i will be putting the stockers back in i think

the visors are thicker but they do work nicely but they dont snug up to the headliner but who looks at that anyway haha

Re: best T-top headliner

all the big companys as in hawks, year one, classic industrys, the paddock, get there abs headliners from a company called acme headliners. which has no history at all on the internet and no contact number. reguardless they all fit like sh*t . im on my second one because ive changed interior color. as jer flash said the visor holes dont line up so needless to say i left the one screw out and its not noticable. they sag very much on the back roof rail(even with a roof console. i found a forum that said to help with the sagging use velcro. i have about 2 12inch strips on the back rail side and it helps but they still sag. plain in simple they suck.. if anyone finds or knows of a different material headliner for out cars let me know i will buy it asap
----------
oh yeah i forgot to mention. if you look at my pictures in my garage album look at the first picture. you can see the black headliner and then youll see some of the white body colored exposed metal where the headliner sags

Re: best T-top headliner

As mentioned, all retailers including myself get their headliners from the same company. The headliners aren't perfect, but they generally aren't too bad. They don't fit perfect, and this is why you see so many varied opinions about their fit. Some say they fit "great", others say it was a disaster. It ultimately comes down to patience and some installation experience. They don't fit perfect, so you've got to spend some time tweaking the fit. This includes trimming some of the plastic around the sun visor mount opening, as well as using an awl to pursuade the visor opening into the right position. If you have the mindset that it's going to just slide into place like the stock one, then it will indeed be a "POS" in your eyes. If you've done enough mods to your car that you go in with the mindset that nothing fits right and the install is going to be a pain in the ***, then it won't seem too bad. Even after a lot of time spent aligning it, people are right that it doesn't fit as well as stock. It sags a tad around the t-top openings, and that can leave a bit of a gap. With the t-tops on it looks fine, but from outside the car with the t-tops off, it's noticable if you know what you're looking for. If your car is a show car, spend the money to have the stock piece recovered. If your car is a daily driver or you're just trying to improve a tired interior, the aftermarket headliners are money well spent.

Re: best T-top headliner

If the velcro isn't holding, then my only suggestion is to try to attach some thin gauge steel plates to the backside of the headliner that will hold their shape. Perhaps 20 or 22 gauge steel strips that are epoxied to the plastic backside. They will stiffen it up and will allow you to shape it a bit.

Aside from that, for a 100 point show car, honestly, finding a stock headliner that an upholstery shop can work with is really your best option.

Re: best T-top headliner

I recently fitted an ABS t-top headliner bought through USGM Service parts in Australia. Fit was good and helped by the fact the overhead console held it securely in place. Cutting the plastic was a breeze using a cutoff wheel and a dremel. The only issue was the squeaking that came from the ABS rubbing against the metal of the roof. It was so bad I bought some rubber door and window rubber weather seal which is really soft and has an adhesive backing on one side. I removed the headliner and put the soft rubber everywhere the plastic was contacting the metal. Because this stuff is so soft it crushes in nicely and does not rub. Very easy to do and has worked a treat. No more annoying rattles, squeaks and rubbing sounds. Cost about $10.00 for the roll of seal.

Re: best T-top headliner

what if.... you placed foam (1/4 inch think across the whole abs headliner and attached fabric to it? then it would look stock and also be very durable. and also then place the (zcarz) idea and put weatherstripping on the to seal it in place. i will try that i think, cause the stock one is so weak it will eventually happen again...
