My Camaro Project (interior)

Today i thought i tackle the Interior of the car. remove the carpet and what not.
i took aton of photos. so ill post em up.
i used the search for interior topics and one thing that conerd me the most was the rust under the carpet.
knowing that my car has terrible weather stripping that needs to be replaces as soon as possiable. and that it has such high kms on the car theres gotta be aton of rust under the carpet.
heres are some photos of me taking apart my interior.
im not going to add them on here because i dont want to take alot of space up and have it take for ever to load with all the photos for you guys so i added them to photobucket and ill just send you the links of the photos.
so here are the photos from where i started to where i ended today.
so here they are

Its partly taken apart on the dash.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...takenapart.jpg

Heres driver side by the pedals.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...driverside.jpg

when i bought the car. the idiots welded the darn seat to the frame!
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...weldedseat.jpg

I started on the passenger side 1st and worked my way to the driver side.
here it is with the seat removed.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...sidenoseat.jpg

Here is a shot of the carpet removed. just minor surface rust so far.
the rear seats are still in so i just cut the carpet out. im selling the rear seats if any one is interested. no rips or tairs from what i see.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...sengerside.jpg

Now here is the rust by the feet area on the passenger side.

DRIVER SIDE!

Here is the driver side with out the carpet.

rust by the pedal area.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...etbypedals.jpg

i came across this weird ripple wave thing im not to sure whats going on there.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...44/buckles.jpg

Here is a top view of it as well.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ewonbuckle.jpg

i checked everywhere else if i see anything out of the ordanary for any other bends or ripples to any kind of effect and i dont see anything. do you guys have this on your cars or is that mean i got some frame bention happening?
it doesnt look to major.
and im quite surpized how much rust there is. there really isnt all that much. i was expecting alot more rust. i seen some photos of guys with rust under the carpet. i thought mine would belike that. but im surpized its not both sides of the car were soking wet. i need to replace door and ttop seals. they leak very bad.
im going to sand down and wirebrush all the surface rust tommorrow afterwork hopefully and get some good prime to cover the bare metal.
some good trem glad rust primer would work just fine.

Re: My Camaro Project (interior)

Looks like your off to a good start. Are you going back aroiginal or changing up some? As far as the ripple goes dont worry about it that is from the factory seen it before on another camaro i had but never looked at my current one to see if it has it. Now the rust your in great shape especially considering where you live keep the pics coming im currently pondering what to do to mine as well.

Re: My Camaro Project (interior)

thanks. ill take some more photos of it tommorrow. im gunna try to scrape most of the rust away tommorrow. i really want to get rid of the back seats but there is good conditions and i jsut dont wantto throw them in the garbage. maybe ill make a couch or something out f it and stick it in my room or something. tha would be pretty rad. i never thought of that until now haha.
ok well tommorrow ill take out the rear seats insted of working on the rust. ifthere is still some daylight left ill work on the rust.

thanks for the ripple thing. i wasnt to sure if it was from factory or not.

im making a drag car so im gunna change it up abit.
im going to get some aluminum sheet metal and make then for the inner door pannels and get some really thin foam and cover it up with some really thin vinal. i kinda want to keep it looking like a street car. but since it wont see the streets much i thyink i would give it nice look to it i want to be able to take it to car shows and stuff.

Re: My Camaro Project (interior)

Alright so i got off work at 5pm and went straight to the store after to pick me up a chunk of sheet metal for the rust hole on the passenger side. 3 cans of Termclad black rust paint. and a paint and rust scraper wheel.
for fixing the hole in the foor. what type of welder should i use?
i found one on sale for $99.99 from 179.99 at the local store and its an Arc Stick Welder.
here is what it says in the Add.

Power: 120V
Output current: 50 - 70 A
Metal thickness: 18-gauge to 1/8"
Duty-cycle: 10% at 70 A; 20% at 50 A
Electrodes used: 1/16, 5/64"
Two heat settings with 1/16¿ or 5/64¿ welding rods
Thermal overload protection
Easy-start ensures smoother arc
Includes electrode, welding shield, hammer/brush, welding rods and cord storage attachments
Three-year manufacturer's repair warranty
----------
i added one extra D to the ad part
----------
oh i also forgot to mention that im getting a roll bar and im planning on probably do a minitub for the rear since everything is out inside.
would that welder do its job for the minitub? im not to sure about the rollbar tho it says it can weld up to an 8th of an inch think of steel but im not to sure how think the tubing and the plates are on the roll cage.
im not to the best one for selecting a welder.. i could always rent one but i would have to rent out a welder alot so it would be better if i just bouight it. it be cheaper in the long run.

Re: My Camaro Project (interior)

Unless you are experienced at welding I wouldnt recommend tackling this yourself. My dad is a welder and Ive been around it no real knowledge here on technique and specs for what machine. However i can tell you from watching him you want to use a mig welder for your project it takes a bit more skill to use a stick welder and most of these are for big jobs with heavy gauge metal such as building a trailer. Plus you need to get a welder that has a heat or power adjustment, along with a wire speed adjustment if you go with a mig welder just my opinion. But for the price sounds like a good deal you could always get it and use it to practice your skills.

Re: My Camaro Project (interior)

yeah thats what i was thinking.
i guess this could have been in the body thread section...
would someone like to move it into the body section please??

anyways ill see how much a mig would cost.
well i finished taking the rest of the carpet and took the rear seats out today afterwork.
here are some photos i took.
oh by the way. i found almost a whole $4 under the seats and somehow under the carpet. hehe

ok you see all the black tar on the seams? what do i use to replace that with?
its all starting to come off. chunks are coming apart and im woundering what is the best way to remove it. im thinking just scarpe the heck out of it. but im not to sure what product to use to to cover it back up.

Re: My Camaro Project (interior)

joshh44 I noticed you have rust upfront. Well I just found some on my car as well. It actually tore up a lot of the passenger floor board. I am currently about to tackle the problem and it looks to me that from your pictures you have a seam sealer leak in the well where the water channel where the rain goes off your windshield and or you may have a leak coming in from the wheel wells. Think right below the blower motor on your car. The seam sealer on both of my wheel wells cracked and has allowed water to come in. I am in the process of fixing the damage.

As far the welding, I would also second mig welding it easiest to pick up. I would also avoid spending less then 400 on a mig welder. I have been researching this for a good 2 weeks now and everyone says the same. You get what you pay for.

Re: My Camaro Project (interior)

I actually tackled the same thing that your doing right now on my car this past winter break. I need totally new floorboards though, once i grind rust off the top and bottom of the floorpans there will be nothing left, so i made a patch for the same spot as you have on your drivers side.

Before looking at buying a welder though i suggest asking around and finding out if there are any places near you that do welding for a fair price, considering most of the labor is done by taking out the interior already, I got quoted by a guy near me 115$ to fab up a patch and weld it in or screw it in. I was going to learn to weld and fab up a patch but somethings happened with the welder and i wound up screwing in a patch myself until the summer when my uncle will be welding in brand new floorpans for me.

Alot of body work is not as expensive as most people think, Removing the interior is what takes so much time, and if you grind the rust out yourself and cut in the spot for the patch it cuts cost even more.

Re: My Camaro Project (interior)

im going to try to do everything my self. as much as i can. i thought about taking it into a welder so they can do everything that needs to be fix. but there just afew holes here and there. mostly from screw holes. so there going to be a really easy fix. and the rust on the seams it acturally just dirt.
it looks like rust. it wipes off clean tho.

You were very lucky compared to me than lol. Id also prefer to do things myself but welding isnt as expensive as most people make it out to be. Post up some pics of your floorboards with the rust grinded off. Also are you doing the bottom of the floorpans also? Is there rust on your underside of the car?

Re: My Camaro Project (interior)

i havnt had the chance yet to check the bottom. but when i was redoing the front end steering. replacing all the steering components. it didnt look like there was rust on the floor boards.
and its been below -0 for the last week. with clear sky just makes its freeze!!
and by the time it hits around 7pm. its about -5. cold enough that it makes the lakes freeze by that time.
i have a little heater inside with me when i work and some thermal gloves to keep the good ol' fingers warm
but its so dark insidethe car i gotta start putting a afew lights inside. maybe some christmas tree kind of lights and string them up inside the car so i can see what im doing lol.
ill take photos tonight after im done working on the car.

Re: My Camaro Project (interior)

ok i tool the paint and rust scraper wheel to the driver side of the car.
not toally finished. it was getting late and i dont think the nieghbors would like hearing a drill going full out for about an hour.
anyways its looking pretty good. i got rid of most of the rust. there are just afew spots. i havnt got to work by the pedals yet. i just quickly went over it to remove any loose stuff and quickly vacumed it up and called it a night.
so here are the photos.
