86 split rear seats swivel?
I jsut got an 86 IROC last week and looking over the interior, I noticed the rear split seat looked like it was broken or something. I pulled on it in the middle and the seats swung out like a pair of cabinet doors opening up. It seems like they are supposed to do this, as there is nowhere for them to bolt to in the middle at the bottom. It seems really strange since the 89 I had didnt do this. Basically each seat back is only connected by the release handle and the one pivoting bolt at the bottom.
Is this normal, or some special set of seats?

I would guess that the split rwear seats were not original to that car, and someone swapped them in without the pivot point in the middle.

Re: 86 split rear seats swivel?
But the seat backs have no point where they would have mounted, even on the seat itself. There really isnt anything in the frame work of the seat for a mounting point. Also looking at the way the seat mounts at the one point it is mounted, it looks as though it was designed to swing out, there are two pivot points, one vertically (as a normal fold down seat would have) and one horizontally (like a door)
It's weird because you can swing the seats out towards the sail panels and then fold them down so the face is up, instead of face down like when they normal fold down.

Re: 86 split rear seats swivel?
I agree with MNformula350, they are most likely not stock in the vehicle. I just removed my split rear seats in my T/A for a single-piece rear seat. I had to trim down a "T-bar" in the middle that the seats slid into. It wasn't anything to bolt on, it was more of a "hook" feature than anything. I'll have to go look at mine and see if those "hooks" are removable...

Basically (its hard to describe) the one point where its attached to the car has two seperate distinct pivot points. There is an upside down L bolt that is round. It fits into a bracket mounted to the car and this is the point where it swivels out. The point where the bolt attaches to the seat is where it swivels down.
I cant really get a good picture of this connection because the seat is always in the way. Also I cant check the RPO codes because someone took the sticker out of the console

your rpo sticker could be in the hatch glove box on the backside of the lid..
