Factory TPI Water Pump
I have an 88 Trans Am with the LB9 and I replaced my water pump a few years ago with an oe AC Delco iron replacement pump. I don’t believe the pump I removed was the original and I have two questions as a result.
The first being if anyone knows the GM part number for a factory water pump? Secondly if the pump was painted black along with the block and heads at the factory? Since they usually rust quickly after installation depending on the environment the car’s in.
Any info would be appreciated thanks!

Not sure about the original part number, I bought a closeout sale remanufactured pump for $7 or something and it works fine. What I can tell you, is to clean the pump surface with alcohol, mask all the parts you don't want painted, and then spray it with Dupli-Color Engine Enamel Primer first. Then hit it with Dupli-Color DE1635 and you'll have a nice, long lasting factory black water pump.

Re: Factory TPI Water Pump
Original pumps for serpentine setups don't have the ugly bypass boss on the top of the pump.
yes, the originals were painted with GMs cheap semigloss paint installed on the engine. behind the pumps didn't get much paint.

Yup, red one is correct. If you want to get picky, you can go for the correct date code too. !

Re: Factory TPI Water Pump
I’m not too knowledgeable on water pump date codes but I think the last digit on this specific one I found would indicate a 1986 production year:

Re: Factory TPI Water Pump
This is from a 440 mile 89 Iroc:
I ordered a refurbished gm one that seems to be made from the same original style casting, and I’ll be painting it black and installing it but beforehand i’ll take pictures for people on here to have as reference material going forward.
My main question would be if gm would spray primer on the engine block/water pump before painting or just cheaply spray the black paint on by itself?
