Original gas cap question.

I have an 83 T/A that needs a new gas tank and I’m confused on if the gas cap was originally metal or plastic. I have a metal cap but it does not fit new replacement tank. I know new fuel tanks come with gas caps but I’d like to keep the original if possible. Do anyone know of a replacement tank that works with original style gas caps?

Re: Original gas cap question.

Caps were metal into at least 1984.

Interesting the new tank has different threads. Even the later plastic caps fit on my stock ‘84 tank. But I do run the original steel cap.

Unless your steel cap is from something else? Grasping at anything with that to encourage conversation on the subject.

I’m pretty sure my cap has a part number on it.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...se-having.html

That is a common thing with the aftermarket replacement tanks it seems, if you want one that will fit your metal cap (which BTW those are cool) you can try to find a verified original tank from the early third gen like yours which is tricky finding a good one that is not rusty on the outside as well as inside and shipping etc.

The one I have on my 88’ GTA is the Dorman 576183, you could try the Dorman 576054 if you don’t have fuel injection?

This could be the type of part you pay the extra and order local to make sure it works for you as online returns on a tank would be annoying IMO and rockauto returns suck.

Also the aftermarket tanks sometimes don’t like the fuel to enter fast, it’s like that on mine and I’ve heard others complain too. Just another aftermarket part lacking proper functionality and detail…

I would go to a parts store and try a few caps out if you go with the replacement tank. Ironically my new Dorman tank took the old aftermarket locking cap my old tank had and did not like the AC Delco cap I bought for it which is supposed to fit…

Re: Original gas cap question.

Thanks for the link, I would like to get an original tank. I bought an OER tank and that's when i noticed the cap issue. Like you said, finding an original tank may be an issue.

I have an 82 TA with an original tank and a GM plastic cap that my metal cap works with. this new OER will not accept the plastic GM cap or the metal GM cap. The OER tank is probably outsourced to someone else.

I am pretty sure both Dorman and Spectra make them for our cars, according to the research I saw on here Dorman was slightly better and had the baffle inside the tank.

Re: Original gas cap question.

Spectra was the first to make a replacement aftermarket fuel tank for 3rd-gens a couple decades ago and unfortunately they used the wrong threads
on the filler neck. Then a few other companies like Dorman and OER made copies based off the Spectra tank. If you call Spectra tech support they'll
give you the part number for a Stant/Motorad fuel cap that fits. Not ideal for someone wanting to keep their car appearing original.

Best thing to do is buy a tank without the filler neck and then have a radiator shop solder on an original so the correct GM fuel cap can be used.

Re: Original gas cap question.

Nice, I like seeing NOS parts for some reason. The one i have is in almost NOS condition and i really want to use it, but i need to find a gas tank that works with it.
I think that's backwards. Normally people look for gas caps that work with their tanks. I'm looking for a fuel tank that works with my gas cap.

Re: Original gas cap question.

I used a baffled tank from a 91 on my 84 TA. ALL 90-92 tanks have the 1Le baffles. Just need to find someone parting one out.
