1989 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 1LE/R7U
I went to pick up my ProBuilt Automatics 700r4 today and while I was touring around town a couple Firebirds caught my eye at a GM dealer.
I stopped in and asked about it. The guy had zero information about it. He called the dealer owner and got the details.
1 of 26 1989 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 1LE/R7U for the Canadian market.
17,000 KMS, just over 10,500 miles
Priced at $25,000

Cloth, not a GTA. Hard pass. (SOrry man) it's cool and all but high option cars are the ones that will go nowhere but up. Plus Candian cars don't track miles like we do so it's VERY common for dealers to import them, swap everything over the MPH and lie their *** off about the miles.

Car looks mint, and it does have that clutch pedal. Would want to inspect it closely underneath though. And it's "dealers" we're talking about.

Love that car, but the front plate bracket should've never been installed.

If someone told me that was a 10.5k mile car, I'd probably just turn around and walk away. The steering wheel is worn smooth, and the clutch pedal and floor pad seem to have worn. The hinge pin is starting to go and that's what caused the wear on the rocker inside the door.
Why is the map pocket worn open? 10k miles those should be the original rock hard tires.
I wish I had pictures of the Cayenne Turbo S I looked at this summer from Canada that 'only' had 40k miles. It was a basket case. ASSuming you could document the miles in that condition it wouldn't carry any premium. Every super low mile 3rd gen I've ever bought needed almost everything with fluid addressed after a few months of regular driving. Plus 1LE isn't the least bit rare on Pontiacs, every single 89 TTA was a 1LE. If it was a Players Cup Camaro, that's a different story.

Googling the VIN comes back with a few pages about this car.

I was looking at buying this car a few years ago until I saw the undercarriage. It's horribly bad for a low mile car, rust and corrosion on everything.

Re: 1989 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 1LE/R7U
I hate those front brackets. Very fortunate to have lived in states where they aren't required. The way the plate sits on the nose of the car hurts. In 2019 when I was hunting for my current car, an ATS Coupe, there were none in stock at a Cadillac dealer within 125 miles. I had my dealer hunt for cars at distant dealerships. They found a nice one at a Myrtle Beach dealer that I would have bought but, for some reason even though the dealer did order the car and was in South Carolina (no plate required), they (the dealer) screwed on the front bracket. I told me deal to keep looking.
Too bad they didn't design a recessed area for the plate. I had a 2002 Monte Carlo, and the front bumper had a recessed area for the plate. If you didn't need one, there was a removable cover there with some sort of logo (Monte Carlo or Chevy) pressed into the cover. It was one of the best accommodations for a front plate that I've ever seen.

This car now lives on a trailer in the back lot of a Kia dealership in Truro, Nova Scotia. I was driving through a few days ago and spotted it hiding back there among a fleet of parts car third gens. Not sure what the plan is, but I can't imagine it's destined for Kia's inventory.

So it went from Manitoba to Nova Scotia? That was a long ride for the car. You should call them and see if it’s for sale.

Looks a fun car to own, lower guilt levels so driving now and then should be an issue

Re: 1989 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 1LE/R7U
My suspicions ... it was a raced car. Taken off the track, decals removed, or paint changed, and then sold off. Pretty common for the old race cars. Would need to see more pics.
Seems the price for *any* 1LE car now days is in the 25-35 range. I'm somewhat bias as I like them all ... and the history.
Mark.
