I have a friend who bought a Dana 44 from I believe GM back in the day. IDK if they ever used them as a service part.

I was speaking with Mike (Cam Arrow) Im not sure if that's his screen name here) about this a while back. My boss had a 92 Z03 Z28 years ago that had a 9 bolt in it and I have seen 2 other 90 IROCs with 9 bolts in them. He said it was a performance axle option. I had never heard of this but he has forgotten more about 3rd gens than I will ever know.

The 9 bolt was the performance axle, but it's use ended in 1989 to early 1990. As this thread is explaining, many 1990 cars have the RPO for the 10 bolt, but actually have the 9 bolt. It was explained as a possible warranty replacement on grenaded 10 bolts, but the 500 mile car having a 9 bolt, while coded for a 10 bolt, throws all of that into question.
I don't believe the same would be true for a 1992 Z03 car as the surplus inventory would have already been used up by then. Your boss' car probably had the better 9 bolt swapped in at some time in the earlier years.
