The 1986 L69 Trans Am

The 1986 L69 Trans Am has been something that has eluded me for years. I often think back sometimes on all the things I have found/acquired over the years, and compare it to these cars. Both very underappreciated and overlooked. The 1986 L69 is a true gem in the Thirdgen world surrounded by an overflowing sea of basic, over-priced and over-hyped cars.

1986 Production 26 Cars (22 were players challenge cars)

Here I would like to see what everyone else has found in the realm of these cars. Feel free to post 1985 cars as well. I am currently closing the deal on an 85 L69 car and will make a post on it soon, as I do with all my cars.

I currently know of the existence of 3 cars with pictural evidence going back 5 to 10 years in their posting. 4 if you count the most recent one. However, it has been swapped.

First up is a Red L69 player's car. Was raced, crashed, and retired. Was posted here on TGO as a resto project. Then for sale. Dropped off the map soon after

Next, we have another player's car. This is the best-documented 86 L69 in existence. Also found on TGO, This car is going through a Restoration

I almost did not post this one but there is not much out there. I know very little about the car. Posted here on TGO a long time ago on one of the player's threads.

Re: The 1986 L69 Trans Am

This one broke my Dang Heart. This car was sold here not too long ago. The owner said he did the swap to a 350 due to issues with the L69. I do not know if he knew what he destroyed. But It makes me sad. I am stationed in California with this car somewhere hiding in its hills. hopefully, I can get my hands on it. You can still see the hardware where the passenger side L69 duct was.

I remember it and should have bought that car, it was gorgeous. I'm not an L69 guy but what a beautiful example in that color combo.

More of a camaro guy but really enjoy the history lesson on the L69's. Did not know they only made 26 in 1986.
Thanks

If you do find this one, look it over good and verify all of the VINs you can find on it, especially the one on the firewall behind the A/C box, because this car appears to be a 1985, not a 1986.

It has the standard spoiler for 1985, not the Aero Wing, and I don't see any clips on the hatch trim that would indicate that it originally had an Aero Wing. Both spoilers were available on 1985 TAs, but I believe 1986 TAs only got the Aero Wing. Possibly a louvers option might've dictated a standard spoiler on a 1986 TA? That pic also would seem to have a high enough vantagepoint that the top of the 3rd brake, if one is there, should be visible, but just barely. Granted, that pic isn't very good for verifying either of those details, but it looks like an 85, or possibly a swapped hatch.

Another indicator is the Trim Tag on the radiator support. It appears to have, or did have, the typical tag above the radiator, which ended with the 1985 model year. For 1986, the tag was redesigned, simplified and relocated to the right side of the support, in front of the air cleaner assembly. So here's your pic, looking like a 1985, and below it is one I found that shows the 1986 version.

With such rarity on the line, I'd hate for you to believe you're getting a 1986, that's really a 1985. We see things misrepresented all the time when cars are for sale, so try not to let your heart lead the way.

Re: The 1986 L69 Trans Am

I agree. But with it being an L69 car. I suspect a late 85 build date. The car looks like a Franken car. So the glass swap is totally possible. Could have been a player's car too, and that means it could have been crashed, etc. Anything is possible.

How the heck did you get a strut tower stabilizer bar to work with the L69 dual-snorkel air cleaner?
I thought that was impossible.
