which to build an which to scrap? 1991 firebird v8/5sp or formula and 92 trans am
Hi everyone! I've been around f-bodys all my life but mainly camaros an I just got my first f-body since my dad sold his old IROC. Luck behold it was a firebird as my first third-gen, a original 5speed with V8 5.0 TBI.
I work at the local Buick and Gmc dealership an the car was traded in there an I picked her up for $600. Apparently it was bought new at the dealership an ordered from there by the original owner who waited 3months for her. I guess he couldn't get the tpi motor fast enough so he bought a TBI 305 instead but still got the 5speed. She was traded back in in 1997 at my work due to the original owner becoming handicapped an then the 2nd owner bought it from there an they became addicted to drugs an took it Into a guide rail on I5 an caused what you see on the drivers side. The 3rd owner bought it in 08 an sold it just in January.
I bought her at 217,017miles an it now has 220,624 on the clock with the original trans engine an rearend. As of now, she has had a new tune up, filters, all the fluids, running almost synthetic oil in the engine an it has cleaned up that engine so good now. Still smokes on start up but which original engine now 25yrs later doesn't.
So to the main topic, today I find this on the Internet just 5min away: http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/cto/5105857791.html
It's a formula with original TBI 305, auto trans an sounds good, but had like 290,000miles!!!!! The owner also for another $350 will include a 1992 trans am!!! But the trans am someone decided to cut the core support right where the radiator is so they could stupidly pull the engine. I guess the parts car only has 119,000miles.
My delima: should I buy the package an take parts from the 92 trans am an put them on my 91 5spd car? Or should I take parts from my original 91 5sp car an get the trans am running again? This is the parts car trans am: http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/cto/5106787216.html
My car needs fenders, hood, drivers door, new headlight buckets an hinges, the cooling fan fixed, passenger window motor an a few other things. Maybe new ttops due to the plastic ttops an TTOP seals.
It's a hard decision an I just don't know which way to go. My car is cool I mean i have now $1000 in it an that includes the price of the car. I mean it's 1 of little over 2000 5speed v8 cars that were built in 1991.
Help me guys if you can!
Thanks

Re: which to build an which to scrap? 1991 firebird v8/5sp or formula and 92 trans am
Really I want a cool stock looking 3rd Gen that still looks nice, handles, sounds good an doesn't look all beat. Really where I'm going here is what is more worth it to build? Keep my red 5speed v8 1991 car an take the parts 1992 trans am an use it to fix the 1991 an drive the 88 formula an sell it later once the 91 is where I like it?
Or maybe the other way an build the 88 or the 92. I do want a TPI setup an part of me is thinking just wait for a TPI car all together. Decisions decisions.

I was looking at that listing as well. For $350, it's a good parts car. It would already be in my yard except that my yard would then be up for sale when my wife moved out.
It really comes down to what you want to do. I'd be tempted to build my original car. I still have the first car that I bought when I was 16 and it's had several engine over the years. If you really want a TPI, they aren't that expensive. I've seen entire cars with the 350 TPI/auto combo sell for $1000 in our area. A 350 TPI in front of your 5 speed would wake that 91 up.
