I was looking at some 1986 IROC's and Z28's online a couple of days ago. Some of those 1986 85mph speedo's while others had 140 mph speedo's.

Correct me I'm wrong but I thought that the early 1986 cars only had 85 mph speedo's but, those made later in the model year were equipped with 140 mph speedo's.

I'm assuming the 85 mph speedo's in these cars had something to do with the government mandate to try and get the driving public to drive at slower speeds.

I also think it had something to do with what engine option you had. But i cannot be sure. I never seen a 86 Trans am with a 85mph speedo, but i have seen normal v6/ non TA cars that have them.

That's interesting. I didn't think you could get a v6 f-body with a 140mph speedo.

Somewhere on this board I found the following information about Camaro speedos:

1985: All 85 mph
1986: 85 mph on all Camaros, except late year Z28s with TPI, which had 145 mph
1987: 145 mph on Z28s/IROCS with TPI, both 305s and 350s
1988/89: 145 mph on IROCs with TPI, both 305s and 350s

thats what is supposed to be in each car per model year but just remember that a speedo swap is popular and simple to do.

That's what I thought. I ran across a couple of '86 Z28's with the LG4 and they had 140mph speedo's as well. Even if they weren't late '86 model year builds they could have been swapped.

I have an '86 Z28 with a build date of 8/85. It came with the 85 MPH speedo. It has been upgraded already, shall we say.

there were a ton of 86 irocs that came with the 145 speedo .. more with the 145 speedo than the 85 from what ive seen over the years ..

Reagan got rid of the Jimmy Carter 85 MPH speedo rule in 1982;many foreign mfg,including porsche,installed proper speedos in their '82 models...took GM over 4 yrs to start to make the changeThe 85 speedos started in 1979-i recall seeing both 130 and 85 speedos in '79 camaros.
