GM can't find my Z28 in thier history!!
So I've got a late 1983 Z28 with the H.O. 305 L69 with the 700R4. Everything GM is are aware of is that all late 83 Z cars with the new H.O. L69 only came with the five speed's. I have verified that all numbers match and nothing has been changed. They even said the auto for that year never came with the 3:73 rear gears and mine has these gears!! Anybody have any knowledge on this or heard of this combo!! Thanks. Chad

I found that article before. But what's crazy is they still say all were released with five speeds and in this article they say a lot if the data is lost so which one is it!! LOL!!

A late '83 build would be an '84 model. The auto was available with the L69 in '84. Check your VIN for the "E" in the year location.

The last 8 are DL120433. And right in the title is registered as an 83. And the full vin says 83. What's weird is it has Z28 only emblems on the outside. Yet has Z28 5.0HO emblm on dash and has the dual snorkel 5.0 HO emblems air cleaner with gm aluminum intake.

Re: GM can't find my Z28 in thier history!!
All 1983 HO cars had a manual. The trans tunnel would have a hole where a manual trans would've originally existed. Also wondering what the 8th digit of the VIN is... would verify the engine... if the VIN itself isn't a fake, which is probably the case since it apparently doesn't exist.
Seems to me that none of the data about your car can be trusted, and you might possess a previously stolen car. What is the car's color scheme, can you tell if color changes have been made, and what part of the country are you in? 3rdgens were the most stolen cars of the mid-80s.

Re: GM can't find my Z28 in thier history!!
The cars body tag matches the motor and transmission. I have removed both as the motor needed some work. The 8 number in is an H. The vin on the title matches the vin on the dash and body tag. Windshield has never been replaced so I know that tag wasn't removedfor a false one along with all the others that match. This car was ordered by the grandfather of the woman I got the car from. And title history proves that. Car is black with Z28 ground effects in grey with the two lower body striped. Tan, black and blue interior. T-tops. No power options. Only power steering and brakes, and tilt wheel. I've been a mechanic and body man for over 25 years and these curiosities are why I jumped on this car!!

Re: GM can't find my Z28 in thier history!!
What I meant by the car not existing was an HO L69 with a 4speed auto. That's what gm doesn't seem to know about but this was factory build not dealer modified.

Re: GM can't find my Z28 in thier history!!
When the motor and tranny came out I also checked to see if this was a conversion by someone but the tranny tunnel is for an auto. No holes even a stamped bung to pop out for a stick tranny. Plus all the wiring for the 700r4 is factory. All factory hardware down to every nut and bolt are still on this car!!

No, GM can't be expected to know what they built; stuff just wanders its way through their factories all the time with "features from the future" and they don't notice.
Seriously, your car isn't a L69. "H" in the VIN proves that beyond any shadow of doubt. It's a LG4 car that somebody has tarted up a little bit. The auto trans is also proof that it isn't L69 since it wasn't available that way that year.
Any g00b can put stickers, air cleaners, etc. on a car. Doesn't take much. Even the electric fan; those are plentiful in the buzzard nests, not hard to pry em loose.
"HO" = L69. But since you don't have the L69, those stickers are just .... stickers. Any stickers will stick to any car. You don't actually have th e"HO" option.
My 83 L69 car (7 is the L69 engine digit in 83, 84-up it was G, LG4 code was H in all years) is also a Van Nuys (L) car. Last few of the VIN is DL136xxx. Yours is 16,000 earlier than mine, out of a total of around 40k out of that plant that year. Too early to be a L69. (FYI, Camaros had sequence #s starting with 1 in that year at that plant, like 136xxx or 120xxx; Firebirds started with 6; AFAIK the last 5 were all in series, Camaros & Birds mixed together)
So no, it's not L69 aka "HO". Might be a nice car and all that, but the VIN does not lie.
Bet if you get up under it, it has the big fat pellet-bed cat and the 2¼" I-pipe. The LG4 stuff. Bet it also has 3.23 gears. (that's what my little bro's 84 LG4/auto car had; real common combo)

Re: GM can't find my Z28 in thier history!!
So now what isn't making sense. This has the HO badging which I realize someone could have swapped. And has the dual snorkel air cleaner which I realize someone could have swapped that out also. But has the vacuum line diagram still on the core support that show the routing or the vacuum lines that includes where the dual snorkel lines go. Don't think that diagram would be swapped out. So what I need to find is production date. If it's after April then it's possible someone got shafted with purchasing an HO without the L69 short block but everything else was put on!!

Re: GM can't find my Z28 in thier history!!
That service manual list isn't for 83. That's 84 or later.
L69 VIN code was 7 in 83; which had also been the CFI code before that.
Chad,
Ignore the badges. They're just STICKERS. Any g00b can stick any sticker to any car. Stickers "prove" NOTHING except that they're stuck to the car.
There is NO SUCH THING as "HO" without the L69. PERIOD. Nobody got "shafted" when they bought the car. All that "HO" stuff came along later.
The VIN DOES NOT LIE. PERIOD. That's all there is to it. Your VIN says LG4, therefore your car is LG4. Not "HO", not L69. PERIOD.
The "core support" doesn't have the vacuum line diagram (another sticker) on it. Rather, the plastic "clamp" piece that holds the radiator in, has the diagram (sticker) on it. 4 bolts and it's swapped. And, it's DIFFERENT for an electric fan car, from what your car came with; meaning, it came off the SAME car - the SAME L69 car - that the fan (and most likely also the air cleaner) came off of. (see my signature for a simple mental trick that helps when trying to figure out what happened, and you didn't witness the actual event, and all you have is the evidence left over from the event) That one they got lucky when they put all that stuff off of the other car on yours, because they didn't even have to go buy the vacuum line sticker separately. The sticker on the dash you could just buy at the GM store, wasn't even all that $$$ back in the day.
My 36xxx sequence # production date was in March if memory serves, which would put your 20xxx in probably Jan or so. Well before L69/HO production was begun.

Re: GM can't find my Z28 in thier history!!
All of these theories make sense. I will have to do some deeper digging into the car. I will know upon closer look if the dash sticker was replaced. Someone had to do one hell of a good swap of parts considering the factory wiring that was swapped to make the electric fans work right. It's factory wiring not aftermarket for those too. This isn't my first rodeo for missed badged rides. I will definitely dig deeper

Re: GM can't find my Z28 in thier history!!
Which position was the 7 in in the vin?
Incidentally, I just went and looked at my 83 svc manual (looks, strangely enough, EXACTLY like the one in the ebay link!!) and neither "G" nor "7" is included in the engine code list for 83. But of course, the 83 service manual was printed in fall 82, when the 83 cars hit the dealers, and so didn't have either the discontinued CFI (VIN code 7 in 82) or the "feature from the future" L69 (VIN code 7 in late 83, G in 84 up). This, even though I bought my copy in about 86 or so, straight from Helm Inc.

Sofa,I got that info from my 1986 Pontiac Firebird Service Manual, wouldn't the Chevy &Pontiac be the same????
Because this book has the listings from 1981-1990

Yes, Chevy & Pontiac are the same. Same car co, just different stickers.
The difference is, your manual is from 86, as I had said from 84 or later, therefore includes the 84-up info instead of the 83 specific poop.

Here's the corresponding page from the 83 manual. (Sorry, cell phone pic, my scanner is toes-up ATM)

Re: GM can't find my Z28 in thier history!!
The 1983 owner's manual was not updated to reflect the L69; the manual given to L69 owners was exactly the same as all other 1983 owner's manuals. However, a loose page was inserted into the manual to note the differences of the L69 cars.
