This car was pretty interesting to a few of us. It's a '91 G92 with rear drums. It has the whole shebang:hardtop, LB9, T5, oil cooler, dual cats, 3.42 posi, but with rear cast iron drums.

We talked to the owner, nice guy from Pennsylvania. He showed us the SPID located in the rear hatch cubby hole. It showed G92 with all of the individual G92 RPOs and J41 for the rear drums.

We speculated that this was built during a rear discs parts shortage.

I noticed this one in another post, as it seems to be sitting pretty low in that dry grass. I'm always worried I'm going to set something on fire with mine when I park over it.

Yeah that car probably was made during the rear disk brake parts shortage. Wouldn't be that much work to put the PBR rear brakes that the factory should have put on it though.

I'm the guy that sucked up 50 pounds of grass clippings into my engine compartment and HVAC system with my mechanical clutch fan.

I smelled burning grass all the way home.

Good thing I spent 2 hours detailing the engine compartment the night before.


Anyway, the car in question was cool and rare. And it's a rust free, southern car. He said that his friend wanted to trade him his 3rd gen for this one. Hopefully, Jeremy and I were able to talk him out of that.

They had a rear disc shortage on the early 3rd gens and Pontiac called those cars WS7 instead of WS6. They carried all of the WS6 hardware but with rear drums.

A friend has a 91 Formula 350 with R6P (g92 for birds) and it had rear aluminum drums factory. I'll have to look but I think his is WS6 not WS7.

My 91 is also a G92 with rear drum brakes. I thought it was weird too. I also read someplace that there was a shortage of disk brakes in 91.

that was a GREAT platform to start with, optioned out so nicely overall. Hopefully he kept it and didnt trade to his buddy for one that had "a little rust on the fender lip". Fresh paint and recovering the seats would transform that car. It wasn't cut up under the hood and was overall a real survivor.

I am risking serious flame here, but I watched the video. Then I watched like an hour of previous years thirdgen fest burnouts. I gotta say we are definitely not helping to rid our image of backwoods joe dirts running around. Come on guys couldn't we at least pretend we want to be something better than our stereotypical roles. I bet they don't do that at corvette events, Porsche events, rolls Royce events?? Class, it don't cost a thing! I have been on here long enough to read a lot of posts complaining about the bad rap we and our cars get. Always asking why too! I would send them a link to them videos. Im not here bashing but come on now! So now that is said, tell me what you think?

I have done it in a TT Lingenfelter vet, Ford GT and countless other cars, infact, I won't own a car unless it'll leave a little tire snot on the road....

I too love to light em up at times.I also realize doing so in a vehicle that already garners negative attention is probably a bit of a disservice to the whole third gen community. Especially when posting such actions on the worlds most viewed website.
Im just saying if you don't like being labeled a thief ......stop stealing. I'd love to get to the Thirdgen Fest next year. Got my 91 T/A this spring, but have loved them since I was a kid in the 80s.

WTH was that moron thinking when they decided to try to pass a car doing a burnout? Jeez...

I am not opposed to burnouts, in an appropriate place at an appropriate time. I personally don't do them simply because good tires are too damn expensive to burn them at every chance. Enjoyed the video, and that was indeed a nice Camaro. My T/A is also a disc shortage bastard, has the R6P sales package that was supposed to include the J65 discs-all-around, but also has J42 which reflects the actual setup of aluminum front disc and rear drum. Wanting to convert the rear to disc, but the front brakes need some TLC and she needs new injectors first.

I own this car now. So the car is still in Pennsylvania. Survivor yes. Needs a ton of work though. I've already removed about 15 lbs of aftermarket wiring just to try and get it back to stock. I think the southern owner had every stereo shop bell and whistle on this thing at one point. Anyway just about everything needs addressed from engine, exhaust, suspension, interior, paint and so on and so on. But no rust!

Well the seats were shot. Foam and everything. Nobody makes new covers in the tan leather and the local upholstery shops want between 700 and 800 to make new ones and that doesn't include the foam. So I got a set of 4th gen seats from an 02 SS. They are black though. So unforuneantly I'm not sticking with the factory seats. It's just not cost effective.
I got everything working that was not previously. Door hinges, window motor, lock actuators, gauges, lights etc... Now it's on to the engine. It's a high mileage car so it needs valve seals. Then I discovered an intake leak. So I have the manifold off of it right now.
A lot of missing stuff too. A lot of sensors not hooked up and faulty components. I'll work through all of them one by one I guess.

As far as the AMX...well, I've always been seduced by the thought of the "barn find". Actually this was more of a field find. It was parked circa 1996 after an altercation with a barbed wire fence post. It's ALOT of work. I haven't touched any of my 3rd gens in the two weeks I've had it. But now it starts, runs, drives and stops. I've actually spent most of my time trying to get the mouse pee smell out of it. As for the Z28? Well, one run through the gears last night told me I need to find a way to keep the stupid thing...after 13 years, its like a piece of me.

So I, uh, kinda went through this whole divorce thing over the past 6 months. Admittedly, when it comes to divorces, and how they typically go, I came out smelling like a rose. I kept all 4 cars, she bought me out of several joint assets, including our house, so I walked off with half the furniture, a big fat check and all my cars.

The problem? I'm currently renting storage units for my stuff, and 1 each for the SS and the IROC because I refuse to leave them outside for obvious reasons. The Z has been outside for 2 months. Its killing me. Whereas I had a 4 car garage at my former home, everything I'm looking at has a 2 car...anything with a 3 car has been a POS, so far. Just debating with a lack of space now and likely in the future, how many cars do I need?

My 04 GTP is pending sale, and my divorce present to myself is a new 2014 Chrysler 300 S with a Hemi...finally getting one after wanting one all these years. Just not sure what I'll have room for...and that garage is just a memory now.

With that said, I am chickening out on selling it every other day...sorry for the random aside.

Ive often wondered about this on my car, its an 87 GTA, factory t-top that had the 5.0 TPI (ive just swapped in a 5.7) oil cooler, all power options, non digital dash (140mph), but its got drums on the rear ? its got the metal tag on the cover that says use limited slip fluid only.

Unfortunatley the rpo stickers were gone when i got the car because most of interior was missing ! and the VIN number doesnt really tell you anything.

I was told that with 87 being the first year of the GTA they mixed and matched all types of things but i dont know how true that is

not going to flame you, i promise. and i totally agree with you about wanting to live down the "ignorant r3dn3k" reputation that, i supose, is still associated in some cases with being a Third Gen owner. BUT, as can be seen from the YouTube video in this thread, there is a clear, audible difference between a proud owner of a badass street machine getting his money's worth, and an ignorant readnik with a Flowmaster doin' burnouts.

when you mention that Corvette or Porche collectives likely do not engage in that type of activity, well, therein lies the beauty of a Third Gen. do you want the "it girl" who's too pretty to f***? or, deep down, do you want the **** with an amazing @$$? a perfect 10? or an 8 who isnt afraid to get her fingers dirty? crass humor and bad analogies aside, i think you get my point.

and now for a bad anecdote:

at work, there was a guy who bought a late model Dodge Challenger...with a V-6 . it was black on black, with some 20" or bigger black wheels - it looked like a V-8, but what he had was a sheep in wolf's clothing. one time as he was getting into his car and i was backing out of a parking space, i manuevered behind where he was parked and did a quick, nasty little burnout. then i backed up and asked him "do you know why i did that?" with a look that said, Linson, who knows why you do anything, he replied "no." "because i could", i said. we all laughed. my point though, is what is the point of the muscle car hobby if you arent going to drive too fast, and show off in front of your friends? if i had a Vette or a Porche, i would definitely be engaging in similar ignorant behavior.

Can only go up from here, my friend Actually may be moving to FL...fresh start, can rent my parents vacation condo for a year or so while I look for houses and get a new job established, and I can do it all in the car capital of the East Coast and enjoy a nice warm winter and a beach 3 miles away

Yes, drum brakes on 1987 GTAs did happen. And 1987 GTAs could be ordered without a lot of options.

My 1988 Trans Am has the digital dash, factory T-tops, LB9 and rear drum brakes and G80 (limited slip).

Update on the "interesting car". You all know how these things spiral out of control. Thought I just needed to do valve seals. Then I found that intake leak. Then when I started taking things apart to clean 163k worth of grime and dirt you find tons of issues. Now on top of the pile of new parts that need to go back on this car, I have a bunch of other stuff on order. Pretty much every belt driven accessory on this car is shot. A/C is coming off. Sounds like somebody injected sand into that bearing. Smog pump is coming off. It doesn't even push air anymore. Water pump bearing is crap. Power steering pump leaks like it has an enlarged prostate. Timing cover is leaking. Alt-PS bracket has a broken tab. I have it tons of stuff on order to get it back together. I can't wait to see my credit card bill next month.

Anything else I should be looking for while I have this thing basically torn down to the long block? Is it worth it to change the harmonic balancer with 163k?

update on the car. The 305 is torn down on an engine stand. The bearings don't look horrible for a 160k+ mile motor and you can still see the crosshatch on the bores. I was thinking of sending it to the machine shop anyway to have it freshened up. With that in mind and the costs of machining, would you guys keep this car original being an oddball G92 or would you just swap the 305 out for a L98 350?

I think you'll end up spending about $1500-$2000 by the time you get the heads and block freshened. And you'll end up with the same thing you have now, except in a factory fresh state.

Its up to you to compare the cost of keeping it original, or moving to a different drivetrain combo.
