New Historical plates

Just received my Historical plates in the mail yesterday for my Formula.
25 yrs old! Hard to believe that the cars of my youth are turning collectable.

Here is a picture of them on the car they look pretty cool.

Cool! There will be at least 2 89 Formula's cruising around NE Ohio with Historical plates. I got mine a couple weeks ago. Are you running a front plate on yours?

No plate on mine. I can't bring myself to mount it. The car never had a front plate and I see no point in adding it since I would have to drill new holes. I do have the factory plate mount but It will stay in my parts bin. I just keep the front plate in the trunk in case I may ever need to pop it up in the dash to keep the man happy.

That's awesome that you got them for your Formula too!

Mine doesn't have any holes drilled either. I am running the "Show-n-Go" front plate mount on my other cars. Got them from Summit. I might get one for the Formula.

Down here in Stark County, the law is pretty particular. Technically, according the the Ohio Revised Code, putting it on the dash is not acceptable. Some cops ticket, some don't. There was a bill proposed to eliminate the front plate in Ohio, but it didn't go anywhere.

Re: New Historical plates

I found out that in NJ,you don't need front plates on a car that is registered Historical even though they supply you with 2 tags. After of course I bought a set of each Plate Holder.
Kimmee or MJS442 if your interested in the one I have, their for sale!!!

Thanks for the offer. However I am just going to take my chances and roll with no front plate. I would suppose that it is also not legal to bake the hides, and chirp the tires while banging through the gears. Oh well, some laws are worth breaking.

Re: New Historical plates

I got historical plates last summer when I registered the car after the restoration. I have to say that it did hurt a little because the car I bought when I was in High School is now considered a "Classic" I also desided to take my chances and roll with no front plate. I just won't put holes in the front bumper.

Re: New Historical plates

Historic plates have been on my 90 since 2010 (20 yrs where I'm at). I even have em on a 93 Miata. I'm actually considering driving nothing but historic, only one year away. I got rid of my front tag and replaced the grill with one without holes.

Going with no front plate seems to be the trend here. I would rather pay a ticket than drill holes and add that ugly front plate bracket. It is good to know that others here are putting historical tags on their rides as well as taking great care of them so they can age gracefully. BTW while driving home in a snow storm today in Cleveland I passed a guy on the freeway in a nice looking 86 442 Cutlass with historical tags. Could not help but think what an a--hole, and that car deserved a better owner. Oh well.

Re: New Historical plates

When I was up at Summit asking about the plate holder, a couple guys that worked there said they had gotten tickets for no front plate. IIRC it was about $120 fine. IMO if you get a ticket for this, driving a car like a really nice third gen, which you dont see that often around here, you are gonna be a target for future tickets. I dont blame you one bit for not drilling out your bumper, I would never do that either. I just dont want to take the chance, so I run the Show N Go.

I have seen historical plates on some really junky cars-ones that you know they are using as DD. People that abuse the system like that make it bad for everyone else that really have collectible cars.

I understand about people abusing the system, but this Cutlass was really nice. I thought to myself that guy was crazy for driving it in this weather.

As for the plate, the show n go seems like a good option, but I will take my chances. Having more than just few run ins with the law growing up with my old third gens, and other cars. I believe that not having a front plate is not really a big deal compared to some of the situations I have put myself in before.
