1986 Camaro Z28 With 2,900 Miles On Ebay

Re: 1986 Camaro Z28 With 2,900 Miles On Ebay
This really is a strange car. I dont know what to believe. First, the cat is new and the bottom of the car has been spray bombed. Then like mentioned, the grille and lights are faded. The gauge cluster has been tampered with, hence the oil psi markings I mentioned in a different post. That all does not add up to a 2900 mile car.
But then you see things like, RWL Goodyear Eagle GT tires, original hoses, nice hood liner, dash pad and steering wheel, all seem to look original and in nice shape.
I dont know what to think.

Re: 1986 Camaro Z28 With 2,900 Miles On Ebay
I believe the car is a low mile car, but I do not believe the 2900 miles or the fact that this is being sold as original. There are too many things that don't add up to an original 2900 mile car. Has anybody noticed that the front grill looks pretty worn and the driving lights are slightly hazed? Also, the rear black section of the taillights look worn as does the emergency brake handle. This doesn't happen to a 2900 mile car. Here's the biggest kicker...why does the car have a blue interior, but has black door panels?

Re: 1986 Camaro Z28 With 2,900 Miles On Ebay
I've been following this with some interest. Not sure what to think about the real mileage on the car, but I can see the issues other here have pointed out certainly raise some questions. One more thing that I saw raises another question, it's not something on or about the car, but something on the auction page. I check eBay just about everyday, still looking for an IROC-Z, checking the market and the prices. Unless the car is a piece of junk and not expected to bring much, almost all car sellers on eBay will opt to include a car history check (for a fee) as part of the auction page. The check includes mileage reports for reregistration/title changes, safety inspections in some states, and some other events like insurance claims. This car has no history report included, which I find a bit strange for what is described as a low mile collectors car on eBay.

A small thing that is funny to me. If I bought and stored a car for 27 yrs, hoping it would someday be a collectible, I would not change anything on it. (ie tips)

And to top it all off the coolant overflow tank is empty. Also the stripes are peeling off on the back bumper which I find odd for a low mileage car.

Still though if you're trying to fetch good money for a car you should top it off. 90% of the people out there won't think of that and will just assume the car has been neglected....which appears to be the case in some aspects.

true. My car was in storage for most of 23 years and the overfill tank was empty... it was not neglected in its garage but just not used.

You could stand on those exhaust tips. How would anyone including the place that put them on think that was acceptable? The car looks ok but bottom of the barrel. Terrible interior options.

Re: 1986 Camaro Z28 With 2,900 Miles On Ebay
I too am unsure what to think about this car, given the issues people have pointed out.
The exhaust tips are just hideous, how they could even end up like that on a 2,900 mile car does not compute...how it could roll out of the shop/garage like that does not compute.
I do like seeing something with low miles other than IROC after IROC after GTA; it's kind of a shame though that us, the only people that care about these cars, by and large have no interest in anything other than top top top of the line vehicles, some even suggesting it should have an engine swap.
I do think it is possible that someone could buy that and store it; not everyone that is fortunate enough to have an opportunity to have a cherished toy can afford the top of the line model; I know I certainly can't afford the ridiculous $60k that top of the line Camaros/Mustangs go for now, or even the $45k that a loaded SS/GT costs now. Most likely someone back then came into some money or had a chance to get something as a toy, and got the best they could afford, or perhaps they actually liked the Z28 more than the IROC - I know I'd take a Challenger R/T Classic over an SRT-8 because I just like the look more, could have been the same deal here.

Re: 1986 Camaro Z28 With 2,900 Miles On Ebay
I can tell you what originally happened here. Somebody wanted a Z28 and that was all they cared about. I bought a truck in 1987 and the only options were carpet, upgraded fabric seats, two-tone paint, chrome rims and a cassette player stereo with 4 speakers. The windows were manual, manual seats, no AC, no tilt wheel, etc. I was more than happy with that truck.
In 2000, I went to the local Chevy dealer and looked at a new Camaro SS. I wanted the car without leather and was willing to take the car with manual windows if I could. Unfortunately, it's hard to find a top end car without all of the options these days.
Remember, the power options were all still fairly new in the 80's and many people weren't willing to pay the price for these things and deal with the potential electrical issues associated with them. They weren't important then as they are now.

Agreed, Scott. In '01 I bought a '97 Ranger XLT, 2WD regular cab, four banger auto with just AC and no power options. Just had the nice, beefier wheels/tires being an XLT. I too loved that little truck and would buy it again in a heartbeat.
It is true it's hard to find base model cars on lots unless they are basic economy cars. Any performance or luxury car will have $5k-$10k in options, and often times they are oddball option combos nobody would ever custom order. I can't remember the last time I saw an '11+ Mustang GT on the lot that had Track Pack, 3.73s, xenons, a six speed, and no other junk, but I have seen plenty that were over $40k that had none of those options, oddly enough.
I think it's exactly what you said, someone wanted the Z28 name and went out and got one and loved it for what it was.

hmm, the pedals, the tips, the misaligned cluster with the "wrong" oil psi gauge, what the f is an L64 305? someone mentioned the tail lights showing some wear, did they even have the grid tail lights in 86 or should they be like the older two bar style? alot doesnt add up with it. still a nice looking car, i like it, except for the tips

Re: 1986 Camaro Z28 With 2,900 Miles On Ebay
This may also have been an advertised special priced car when it was sold new. Where most Iroc's / Z28's were several thousands more..... a dealer could run an ad for a car like this at a low price attracting buyers to the lot.... which might have gone even lower if they couldn't move it.....just like now

Re: 1986 Camaro Z28 With 2,900 Miles On Ebay
Well, the car didn't sell. It was bid up a little over $9700 and didn't meet the reserve. I don't have a good feel for what the car is worth, I haven't seen this model for sale very often with supposed very low miles. But I think if it really was a true 2,900 mile 1986 Z28 in excellent condition, it should be worth well north of $10k.

I really enjoy seeing these time capsule cars. They were great looking cars when they came out.
If it were me, and I owned the car I would have hunted down a factory correct exhaust for it, and just showed the car at cruise nights.
