Correct paint code for Red 1983 Trans Am
Does anyone know the PPG paint code for a red 1983 Trans Am. I'm painting the engine bay and cowl and would like to match the original paint. The paint store wants me to take a part in so they can scan the color but the problem is that someone sprayed everything with rattle car red that is the wrong shade. I tried giving the paint store WA 7211 as the GM code for Spectra Red that I found at this site:
http://firebirdattitude.com/cgi-bin/...r=1983&rows=50
That didn't seem to help as they couldn't match it to their Omni line.
Second question is the code for the flat black on top of the cowl/ windshield wiper area.
Any help would be appreciated - ! plan on buying the paint tomorrow and spraying tomorrow afternoon.

On a 83 you should have a plate riveted under the hood with your rpo paint code.

Thanks, I'll try that see if they can match it. I didn't see a plate under the hood so it was probably removed when the previous owner painted everything red including the master cylinder.

The plate should be near the front of the entire compartment, on top of the radiator core support. Not going to be a cowl-mounted tag like earlier GM cars.
Better get some aircraft stripper to get all that nasty red paint off. I hate it when people do that to nice cars...

Found the code - 75. The bad news is that PPG does not have that color cross referenced to the new Omni paint line. The best they can do is scan the old paint and match it that way.
I have some aircraft stripper - I'll try leaving it on long enough to peel just the top layer. You're right about it being nasty stuff.
