87 TA hood insulation
Does anyone know where I could get the factory hood insulation or at least the part number so I can try to find it? I know it's discontinued but maybe I can find some NOS.

Re: 87 TA hood insulation
Thanks for the part number. I thought it would be impossible to find. The Camaro one is definitely different. I too have the one from Classic Industries, it is OK but I don't like the cutouts in the center that serve no purpose. I am not sure what those are about & Classic isn't sure either.
I didn't like the real thick gray one so REM the manufacturer cut me one in 1/2" with the black side showing.

Re: 87 TA hood insulation
Your not supposed to remove the cutouts that are not needed.their there because of the different types of hoods.

Re: 87 TA hood insulation
I looked up the manufacturer REM on the net and called them & told them my problems with the color & that it is too thick. They offered to make me a new one in the 1/2" material & do a reverse stamp so the black side shows.
To refer to the previous comment I know enough not to punch out the cut outs I don't need! I was just saying I wish they weren't there so it would look more stock.

That spring came off a Red 88TA and it was painted red.so I guess they were painted,I don't remember if the old one was white,I'm pretty sure it was.

Re: 87 TA hood insulation
No offense to 1AAuto, as they have been very good to me over the years...but their hood insulator sucks IMO. The area covering the cutout for the fresh air hoods is a little TOO cut out...meaning it fell right out of mine when I opened the package.
Not cool. Why can't anyone make a decent, OEM-looking hood insulator? Here's to being thankful my IROC one is flawless after all these years...

Re: 87 TA hood insulation
1A's is made by REM Automotive just like everyone else's. I think it's like buying carpet, it's all made by the same company, just a different seller.
Manta, I'm about to pick up some new fasteners, the local Advance only had two packs, so they had to get some from another store. Hopefully I'll have it on this evening, if I do I'll take a pic. I put my new GM hood/cowl weatherstrip on yesterday, Modern Day only had a few left.

Re: 87 TA hood insulation
I took advice from a member here and had mine custom cut with the inside facing out. It is a solid black color and looks much better then the raw insulation. I also had it cut from thinner material so that it didn't look too thick. I haven't installed it yet as my car is still in paint prison, but it seems like it should look good when installed. I ordered it through here -

I will see if I can post a pic of it later.

Re: 87 TA hood insulation
Mine was falling apart when I got the car, and it probably started out raw looking. But the black side looks so much cleaner, that it was worth it to me to make it less original and more clean. The hood insulation on later models like my TTA is molded and solid black, and it looks so much better then the early insulation.
This is the original hood insulator on my TTA. I bought the REM insulation for my 82 TA.

I do know 87 and up are silver cad type plating. No idea on the older ones. I also know most of the service replacements are black in color..

Re: 87 TA hood insulation
I found out that the the spring is White on my 86,and I asked a member on here with a White 86TA if his is White and it is and I asked my neighbor about his red TA(that's the guy I got the 88 from) he said he never painted the spring he had it for 13 yrs.So I guess they are painted to the body color.

I only have 8 cars, 1-87, 3-89s,4-91-2s for reference and a mag artical that actually pointed out the spring. They are all org paint cars and silver springs.
Not trying to start a war but just trying to find out when they switched.

Mine is a Norwood car,I'm looking at 82s pic and it appears to be a light color.Don't get me wrong I did paint it White, but that's because the one I replaced was.I'm the original owner and I never painted the old one.I think I still have it,I have to check it out I want it to be correct!!

Re: 87 TA hood insulation
Mantaguy - it looks right. I don't think the fasteners would have lined up if it was upside down. When I ordered mine, the guy from Fbodystore told me that the later ones were made with the black side out to more closely match the original. The earlier ones looked like raw insulation so that is the side they face out.
