I've seen a few for sale on line over the past 6 months, not very many of them though.

Re: RED LEATHER INTERIOR IN IROC Z??

I see more red interior cars than not. I don't like the red myself and I see so many clean cars that interest me, then I see the interior and walk away. Red isn't for everybody, but was popular on white, silver, black and red cars.

Re: RED LEATHER INTERIOR IN IROC Z??

While I wouldn't think Red cloth would be that rare, I would think that Red leather WOULD be, particularly as I've seen so few pre-1992 Camaros with leather that I didn't even think it was available before then.

Desirability is another issue. Before I started working at a Corvette dealer, I *hated* red interiors. After a few years, it seemed like 95% of cars had Black interiors, which I find very boring since absolutely everything is the same color. I have grown to really like Red interiors, as long as they're in good shape.

That being said, I think Red is probably the worst color as far as wear -- Reds tend to fade before any other color, and look particularly nasty when they're not well kept. So if they're in the same condition, I'd take a nasty Black interior over a nasty Red one.

In conclusion: it's probably rare, but only desirable by a select crowd, and even then, only if it's in nice condition. I've found that most people still hate Red interiors regardless.

I'm with you...I can't stand the red interior, and have never been able to. Its amazing how popular it was. I remember my mother purchasing her grey '89 RS over an '89 IROC 305 TPI at the same dealer solely because it was black with red, and she hated the red.

If she had bought the black IROC instead, chances are I'd still own it now, as the RS became my first car in '98. Its amazing how long ago '98 was

Re: RED LEATHER INTERIOR IN IROC Z??

my Iroc came with black grey cloth interior I found some mint conditon Red leather seats im going to swap in it, Most thirds gens come with cloth interior and everybody swaps 4th gen leather seats usally, well at least her in California Bay Area, My first Camaro Rs same thing cloth seats i changed them to 02 leather black seats but everybody does it and now with my 90 Iroc I sold the same seats i had and got the red ones. Black is boring, but it depends on the color combo on the car, In the GTA I have it came with grey cloth seats I swapped those out with 4th gen trans am ebony leather seats. Everybody has different opinions but at a car meet the one that sticks out makes the most noise

Re: RED LEATHER INTERIOR IN IROC Z??

Now not to start a fight, but colored interiors IE Red, Blue, Green, remind me of old people. It is kind of one of those things that older people would go for because it was so popular in the 50's 60's and 70's it fell out of favor in the 80's now we are stuck with 2 or 3 colors in an interior, Black, Gray or brown.

I will agree that a Silver IROC with a red accent stripe and a Red interior does look nice.

Thank goodness that they do not make them the way they used to. I would rather drive my 3rd gen over my 67 Riviera (which was a top model for Buick in 67) The Camaros of the 60's and 70's are far inferior to driving characteristics than the 3rd gens. Ultimately I like my newer vehicles even more, my 2005 Rainier or my 2007 Tahoe LTZ are heads and shoulders above anything from the 90's or prior for quality and longevity.

"They do not make them the way they used to." I will admit the interiors have become plastic, and the sheet metal is thinner, but really take an old Arizona 1960's or 70's car that has never seen snow, and bring it to Michigan and drive it in the winter, in 3 years it will have signs of rust everywhere. Take just about any new car, same thing, and it will look as good as it did 3 years ago. Or take any old car and the rule of thumb was 100,000 miles and the engine needed to be rebuilt, or the car was worthless junk, but now, most new cars today it is expected to get 200K out of them without a major problem. It may not be the hard and fast rule, as some cars just have their issues. Sure they do not make them like they used to, and that may be a good thing.

Honestly, the 80's and (obviosly including the 3rd gens) get a lot of guff for not being great cars, but here is what I observe. in 1989 when I got my old 1967 Riviera, I never saw any around, at that point the old 60's cars around here were almost extinct. But today, I still see a lot of older 90's cars and 80's cars still on the road, sure they are beat up or pretty darned rusty, but they are still out there. it was not like this 25 years ago.

Even car shows for that matter, I think a lot of them still group the 1980's through current... It is like anything after 1980 is almost shunned by car shows... A 1984 may be too new, but they are 30 years old.

Re: RED LEATHER INTERIOR IN IROC Z??

Scott,
One thing I will have to disagree with you on is I do not see that many Colored interiors. Maybe because I am more interested in the Firebirds, but over here Red interiors do not exist after 1988. I have owned 9 3rd gens, none of them had a Red interior.

I looked it up, since 1990 was the only complete year of RPOs I have here is the breakdown:
Camaro Coupe
19I Black - 8431
66I Beechwood - 1139
73I - Flame Red - 5562
82I Gray - 17831

Camaro Convertible:
19I Black - 859
66I - Beechwood - 118
73I - Red - 294
82I - Gray - 752

Firebird, Trans Am, Formula, GTA
19I Black - 1605
66I Beechwood - 2294
73I - Red - 0
82I - Gray - 16654

Re: RED LEATHER INTERIOR IN IROC Z??

I love it because it's different, so long as it's in nice shape. When the red gets beat, it looks pink and becomes terrible. When it's fresh, it pops and I think is a nice compliment to the white and silver cars. I love a blue gut on a thirdgen too. So many have gray and black interiors that it gets boring in my opinion. My previous car was silver with a red gut and my IROC has the red leather.

Re: RED LEATHER INTERIOR IN IROC Z??

Style was different before buy yes reliability and function is way better. Any car can hit 200K if you maintain it right, on alot of the new cars they say now 15K oil change intervals and 100k coolant flush and lifetime trans fluid, its all tricks to sell the car, but back to the red interior, I have owed five 3rd gens, the last two are keepers and its rare to find a red interior the first one i had was a 91RS with black carpet and panels and grey seats, then a 91 formula firebird and it had all grey interior, then 89 trans am LB9 with all grey, then the 90 IROC with black carpet and grey seats and the GTA with grey interior. leather is rare to find on any third gen. Colored interiors on some paints will make it pop and look good as long as its in good condition. The GTA is in the drive way but has grey interior with 02 trans am leather ebony seats but the Convertible is a garage baby with red leather soon to be installed so i will make sure its always protected so they dont turn pink and nasty with all the cracks.

Re: RED LEATHER INTERIOR IN IROC Z??

I love the red interior! .....although my tan/beechwood is my favorite. ...while we all have our own preference as to color, what I do NOT like is the generic, goes with any color, saves GM money, grey. Bleh. ...and don't think that's not why they added grey to the list. Go find an exotic with grey interior. You can't. (charcoal doesn't count!) Now if you truly like grey, then hey, knock yourself out, but.....to me it looks cheap. Now I get that red on red isn't for everyone either!!!!!! LOL, but at least it's not the same as every other car. Now my trailblazer has charcoal leather, and man, it looks sharp!

I still see plenty of the red interior Camaros still, but they aren't leather and are trashed to ****. I used to have a 1988 Anniversary Corvette white/red, eh.

Re: RED LEATHER INTERIOR IN IROC Z??

Problem with red (or any color) interiors from that era is that EVERYTHING is red or whatever color, which quite frankly is disgusting. I guess we should be fortunate GM spared us a red dashboard.

Cars today with red interior, much much nicer IMO…since it's usually just the seats and a part of the door panels.

Well the 70's had a pretty funky collection of interior colors. I suppose each decade in its own fashion has to leave a mark in the automotive world. Example: the AMC Matador Oleg Cassini package.

^^^Man have people never heard of floor mats? What's up with that?

I got a non car guy friend with a newish Corolla and he's never had floor mats in his car, carpet is absolutely trashed from winter salt.

But yes interiors in general were pretty bad from the early 70s until pretty much today.

That's ok. I know people that will use those paper floor protecters as floor mats because they dont want to buy real ones. I've even taken them to swapmeets and other warehouse stores and showed them they are really cheap and will only cost them about three trips to Starbucks.

GREAT information, John. Do you have any idea how many of the 1990 294 red interiors were for IROC convertibles? and of those how many were of leather?

I looked it up, since 1990 was the only complete year of RPOs I have here is the breakdown:
Camaro Coupe
19I Black - 8431
66I Beechwood - 1139
73I - Flame Red - 5562
82I Gray - 17831

Camaro Convertible:
19I Black - 859
66I - Beechwood - 118
73I - Red - 294
82I - Gray - 752

Firebird, Trans Am, Formula, GTA
19I Black - 1605
66I Beechwood - 2294
73I - Red - 0
82I - Gray - 16654

From what I can gather:
73 is the color code for the Red interior thei third letter or number determines other things, like seat, or seatbelt, B, C & 2 usually are for the trim level, B & C are always cloth and 2 is always leather (1987 +)

73B - Trim Combination (Cloth?) Flame Red - 15
73C - Trim Combination (Cloth?) Flame Red - 171
732 - Trim Combination Leather - 108
73I - Trim interior Flame Red TOTAL - 294
739 - Seat Belt Flame Red - 294

hello, i was wondering if you could point me in the direction of where you're looking these production numbers up, I'm having a heck of a time, mainly I'm trying to look up stuff like how many irocs had the g92, n10, 732, ect packages and it led me here, this thread has by far been the most informative about the 732 red leather interior and I was hoping to further my research into potentially how rare it was in a 1990 l98 hard top iroc.

thank you.
