With gas prices the way they are, folks that still have stock TBI cars ought to be revelling now - maybe not as fun to drive as a 350, but the little 305 TBI gets 32 highway!
I'd really love to have a Tesla! Can you imagine? 0-60 will beat anything out there, and it's all electric (practically free)!

If you dig around a little on that website, you can find the fuel economy figures without downloading anything. You can also view how they were rated under the old system when our cars were new.
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/ratings2008.shtml
What that means is that if you're only driving your car in nice weather (no fuel enrichment), drive sensibly, and don't run your A/C constantly, you'll get better mileage then the modern statistics.
FWIW I've owned a few V6, TBI, carbed, and TPI 350 equipped thirdgens, and they all got really close to the same mileage. The big thing is just keeping the cars in tune, and not driving like a jackass.

EPA has changed the way it estimates MPG.
Starting in model year 2008, estimates reflect the effects of
* Faster speeds & acceleration
* Air conditioner use
* Colder outside temperatures
What else do I need to know about the new ratings?
* The tests lower MPG estimates for most vehicles.

Re: Find out the gas mileage you could be getting!
Looks about right on my 85 bird. I can remember when i finally discovered that the TCC wasn't locking up on the highway. Once i had engaged the TCC lockup feature, i was amazed to see my gas mileage in the low 30's, doing 80mph cruising...The highest i ever saw was about 35 mpg, which still trumps just about anything i ever drove...Now i gotta get rid of that 2.8L and get an LS1 in it's place...i'd bet a modern powerplant in a fairly light and incredibly aerodynamic thirdgen would do wonders for fuel economy...and powa!
