1989 Iroc G92/1LE?

At a local "muscle car dealer" he has a 1989 Iroc that is a MM5/LB9/G92. He is claiming it is a "street version 1LE". It is a hard top no power windows or locks, AC,factory installed sub-frame connectors, and MSD box. To me it is just an Iroc with the LB9/MM5/G92 with out power windows or locks, I have never heard of a street version 1LE with AC. Has anyone ever heard of this or is the guy bullsh@#$ing. He claims he has documentation.

IIRC and I may not, the the RPO should include 1LE. As far as I know, there were no OE SFC's--and certainly not an MSD box. Calling on this one.

I was going to ask him to see the RPO, but I did not because I did not think it was a 1LE since it had AC.

Re: 1989 Iroc G92/1LE?

TELL YOUR LOCAL RIPOFF GUY, TO BRUSH UP ON HIS CAMARO'S. THE 1LE IS A STREET LEGAL OPTION ALL ON IT'S OWN. THE G92 OPTION GAVE YOU A PERFORMANCE PACKAGE, WITH 4 WHEEL DISC BRAKES, SPECIAL REAR END AND 3.23 AXLE AND MORE. AND THOSE CARS DID OR DID NOT HAVE THE A/C OPTION AND FOG LIGHTS. THE ILE ON THE OTHER HAND, DELETED THE A/C AND FOG LIGHTS GAVE YOU ALL THE G92 OPTIONS PLUS A ALUMINUM DRIVE SHAFT. YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT THIS CAR IS OR ISN'T, HERE'S A TIP, DON'T ASK HIM A THING, TAKE THE SERIAL NUMBER OFF THE CAR TO YOUR LOCAL CHEVY DEALER. ANY GOOD PARTS DEPT WILL BE HAPPY TO RUN THE SERIAL NUMBER FOR YOU AND THAT PRINT OUT WILL TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT OPTIONS THIS CAR HAD AND DIDN'T HAVE WHEN IT LEFT THE FACTORY. Re: 1989 Iroc G92/1LE?

I get so tired of hearing people try to lay claim to being an heir to the throne. It either has 1LE in the RP0 codes, or it does not.

My buddy had a B4C 1LE that had air in it. Some 1LEs had it, I think it was 91 and 92 models only though.

Re: 1989 Iroc G92/1LE?

1) As mentioned before the 1LE was a street Legal Race car. The only things that would have possibly made the 1LE not street legal would have been where the car would not have met the Emissions standards or the Fuel mileage requirement for the year. Fortunately 1LE's met the requirements. Even the B4C/AC/1LE cars met the requirements. Unlike Ford that would make a car that did not meet certain requirements and paid the Fine or fee for making a car for special service or whatnot GM tried very hard not to cross that threshold, and to my knowledge never crossed it. That is why certain options were not available with other options on some cars but were on other models, to keep cars above the threshold.
2) The JG1 Aluminum driveshaft was available W/O 1LE
3) the 350 got the 3.23 or 3.27 (depending on year) & the LB9/MM5/G92 got the 3.42 or 3.45 (Depending on year) from 1987 - 1992 Without the 1LE
3) The most significant difference between a 1LE and non 1LE car was the front Brakes. There were 2000+ of them made most of them being Pontiacs...
4) If the SPID tag does not have 1LE then its just another bare bones Camaro IMHO, I would prefer to have either A) a plane Jane 1LE, or B) A loaded Camaro or Firebird, over a C) a Plane Jane "performance" F-body.
5) There were no Factory Sub-frame connectors... unless you bought a Convertible, and even "Factory" Convertibles were not made in the Factory, they were all conversions.
6) get the Documentation, get copies if he will let you, someone here will be able to tell you whether or not he is BSing you...

Re: 1989 Iroc G92/1LE?

Don't be so hard on the salesman. At least he tried to do his homework on this one. The Camaro White Book has wording in it that confuses a lot of people. Camarosource.ca also uses the White Book wording. If you don't read it carefully, it sounds like a Camaro with the LB9/MM5 and G92 with AC delete gets you a 1LE. The confusing part of the wording is where it states that the same car with AC is a "street vehicle". Because it's worded that way in the 1LE descritption section, people don't think of it as a regular street vehicle but a special street version 1LE. Here's the wording used:

When G92 was ordered, it forced several other options including engine oil cooler, 4-wheel disc brakes, dual converter exhaust and P245/50ZR16 tires. A 1989 Camaro with G92 had to have either the 350ci (RPO B2L) engine with automatic transmission, or the 305ci (RPO LB9) with 5-speed manual. These Camaro's had 145 mph speedometers and 5500 rpm redline tachs. If RPO G92 was ordered with air conditioning, the cars were built as street vehicles. If air conditioning was not ordered, Chevrolet added 1LE equipment for the race series.

Re: 1989 Iroc G92/1LE?

The confusion really comes into play because it was widely publicized that the 'trick' to getting a 1LE Camaro was to order the G92 (performance axle ratio) and delete the A/C. That was the trigger to order a 1LE. That's what the White Book is trying to explain.

The way it worked was pretty simple... On the order form, you selected the high performance options, and deleted the A/C to trigger 1LE and the big front brakes. If you didn't delete the A/C you got virtually everything except the front brakes.

1LE means big front brakes. If the code is there, the brakes are there. If it's not there, the brakes aren't there. What's so hard to understand about that?
