85 camaro: what are these holes for?

I just recently bought an 85 camaro Z28 and noticed there are two holes at the top of the rear window. I first thought it was for the third brake light but someone mentioned that started with the 86 model. Now I'm not sure what it's for. I have been searching for pictures of the rear view of an 85 model but am unable to find any. Anyone know?

Re: 85 camaro: what are these holes for?

Think the hatch may be off an 86 car that someone took the light off?

I was thinking the same thing. I also noticed on the roof, above the holes there looks like window washer sprayer but there is no wiper.

If the car has the rear washer but no wiper, and holes in the glass, you have a replacement hatch.

Re: 85 camaro: what are these holes for?

Yep, it looks like an '86 hatch, you might also find a set of three electrical contacts on the inside of the hatch under the decklid depending on how it was swapped. If you have a Upull or junkyard nearby keep an eye out for an earlier one. Also keep in mind if you want the defrost grid or not. Around here in Mn you can usually pick them up for around $30 or so.

Not sure what that square thing is on the roof though.

The square thing looks like window sprayer. I believe some models have a rear wiper and there is a switch on the dash that looks like it is for the wiper. Fortunately I do have a junk yard near by. I stop by and see what they have. Thanks.

I've always seen the rear wipers on the bottom of the glass though, not at the top.

This pic does explain the squirter nozzle on top though.

Huh, didn't know that. They're a little awkward to swap especially after you unhook the strut mounts. I used a large cardboard box to support it when I did mine.

Re: 85 camaro: what are these holes for?

Meh..how worried about it are you? I recently deleted my high mount on my 86 in favor of the underspoiler mount.

Just plugged the holes with some metal hole plugs that I painted black. Lots of RTV under the plug, then cut some plastic discs that cover the holes on the inside. Just used more RTV on the underside and that holes the plastic discs in.

Hard to notice from a distance...I still have to touch the paint on the plugs up a little though. I also planned to spray paint over the black lines and have the window tinted. One day Ill replace the hatch with a non-defrost glass...probably during my repaint. But for now, and the years before that happens, this works and looks fine to me.

Better than swapping a whole hatch...unless you have another reason for swapping the hatch.

any reason why you would go with a non defrosted glass?

Re: 85 camaro: what are these holes for?

Easier to tint and looks better when tinted in my opinion. And in the years that Ive own thirdgens, Ive used the defrost MAYBE 6 times. haha honestly Ide almost rather have a rear wiper than defrost. If it could hide away when not in use.

Just looks cleaner I think. I have to mess with the alignment of my deck lid anyway...so I might as well go on step further and replace the glass while Im there.

Some owners live in climates that are lucky enough not to have to deal with many cold weather issues. There are also quite a few owners that only drive in summer and park their rides during winter.
