undercarriage and engine bay looks...
Hey guys,
over the past 2 days i have gutted my engine bay and i have started to sandblast ( if it wasn't for a nasty thurderstorm i think i would of finished in one night. But my question to you is? what have you done with your engine bays and wheel wells and underbody? im thinking of sandblasting the whole thing and paint it all at once.
Now was it from fastory all one color or was it just the engine bay and outside of car?
information and pictures are more the welcome@! people post your resto pics!@
cheers
Dougie

Might depend on the year. I have a 83 that the engine bay was body color and the under side of the car was coated in DP40 green/gray. Here are a few picts from my resto. I am doing.

Both My cars have painted engine bays and Underbodies all the same color of the car.(white and yellow) Maybe its because they were both southern cars I don't know.

For early thirdgens, 82-84 at least, Van Nuys built cars had body color undercarriages and engine bays (they painted everything even the inside), cars from Norwood had gray undercarriages and interior and body color engine bays. Maybe the water based paint that they used at the Van Nuys plant was cheaper so they could spray the whole car with it, but I’m not sure why the difference.

My '89 Van Nuys ride looks very similar to scottmoyer's except my undercarriage has about half the red paint overspray. There's much more grey exposed. She's painted red under the hood pretty much the same way.

My car is also a Van Nuys car and the overspray on the driver's side is heavier than the passenger side.

Re: undercarriage and engine bay looks...
my god, your cars are so clean under there. Being in canada, the guy before me undercoated it like 4 times and the grease is THICK! its going to be so hard to remove it all. Not to mention how many larger than my fist rot holes i have had to weld patches into. The battery tray was rotted, the drivers and passenger floor was rotted. ive basically had to replace everything on this car, i just need the undercoating off so i can paint the whole undercarriage as well

Wow, Scott your engine compartment looks great . Even your reservoirs are like new, mine are all yellowed looking. What do you use on your hoses to make them shine like that? I was told long ago that the best cleaner to use on an engine is Simple Green, do any of you agree?

Re: undercarriage and engine bay looks...
Simple Green is really good and used by many. The great thing about it is that it's effective without being a really harsh damaging corrosive liquid (easier on exposed hoses and wires if you overspray). Still be sure to rinse and remove any cleaner that you use and protect the paint. The great finished look on the plastic and rubber is usually not achieved with a cleaner but with detailer/protectant.

Re: undercarriage and engine bay looks...
I have used Simple Green to detail the engine but only on areas that need it. All it is is a good cleaner. The hoses, rubber and black components have all been shined up with detail spray and vinyl/rubber protectant. When these engine photos were taken, I used Meguiar's detail wipes to detail everything under the hood. They have now replaced that formula with something else and it doesn't leave the same look. Lately, I've been using the Eagle One Nano protectant.

I just went to Meguiars.com and see they still have the old protectant. The new stuff I'm using is the quick interior detailer wipes. The old stuff was the Gold Class Protectant wipes. I need to find me some more of those!

Re: undercarriage and engine bay looks...
well well well,
i took all your ideas and combined it into one process. To get off the thick undercoating you need to use a gasket scrapper. Once you have the big stuff off you are best to use gasoline to remove the grease underneath. After that, if you use a wax and grease remover, it will take off the remainder of the oil. So far gas has worked the best for getting the bulk of the oil products off!
just thought i would keep everyone in the loop incase someone else needs to do this later on down the road!
Cheers

Re: undercarriage and engine bay looks...
My 91 GTA is mostly primer underneath with overspray litreally just on the sides. I should have some pics soon. It was also built in March 1990 so during the strike year, who knows what that might have affected. Scott, that car looks great for 14K miles. It is as clean as my 2642 mile car!
