Wiring harness restoration woes

I started my wiring harness restoration because its cold out and I figured I could bring inside to work on it. I also figured it would be quick and easy. It turned out to be more difficult than I thought. The first problem I ran into was that the split wire loom came in five different sizes, 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2”, 5/8” and 7/8”and the 5/8” and 7/8” are no longer made. Luckily I was able to find some at the junkyard that was in good shape. The next problem I faced was replacing the many broken connectors. I went to GM first but they wanted upwards of $30 each, which is crazy. Fastenal (http://www.fastenal.com/) has some but the best source I found is Au-ve-co (http://www.auveco.com/). They had almost everything I needed. They also have a lot of other body hardware. The last big issue was replacing some of the faded wires. For example, some of my blue wires had turned green. After that it was just a lot of cleaning.

I also needed some electrical tape that was an inch and a half wide and was surprised how difficult it was to find. I ended up ordering it from Fastenal.

I guess the moral of the story is if you need some obscure piece of body hardware checkout Au-ve-co.

Re: Wiring harness restoration woes

I wondered if it would be a good idea to try to restore the wiring harness I got for my '82 TA. I bought it from someone on this board who got it from a junkyard, and alot of the wires are faded also. Some of the connectors are broken also, or just missing, and some wires I don't even know what they are. I tried to match the connectors up with the shop manual but even then there are a few that I don't know what they are.

Are you basically rewiring the harness?? Seems like it could get pricey buying new wiring. Most places I have looked want you to buy a minimum length of any color, and it seems like it would be tedious. I thought about just buying a TBI harness and the CFI IAC connectors to splice the signal to the two IAC's. At least then it would be a new harness and I wouldn't have to worry about any shorts that may be present from a 25 year old used harness... But that is pricey also...

Re: Wiring harness restoration woes

rewiring the whole thing yourself will definitely get pricey

I'd just clean it up, replace anything that visually looks old and call it a day
