Silver IROC-Z is an '85 only deal?
Hey folks, I was looking on eBay a few days back, and saw that someone was selling an '85 IROC-Z claiming it was the only year you could get a silver IROC-Z directly from the factory.
I have an '85 IROC-Z with a whole 3,800 miles on it. Is it true that it's a one-year only color for the IROC? I looked around and it appears to be the case - But I thought I'd ask the experts!

According to the "Camaro Whitebook",which isn't 100% right all the time,1985 was the only year you could get a silver(code 12 in '85)IROC.Now that's not to say someone didn't special order a silver IROC in other years. And i'm not an expert just sharing what I've read.hope it helps.
Love to see some pictures of your car. Please share with us.And only 3800 miles. You wouldn't happen to be the original owner too?

No, I'm not the original owner. It came out the year I graduated HS, and I would have ordered the TPI and put about 50,000 miles on it the first year rodding the **** out of it! Long way from affording one then :-)
I bought it from the guy that walked around it all those years, just driving it occasionally. I have an '82 Vette with 450 miles, and an '89 Turbo Trans Am with 1,200. So the IROC is my 'high mileage' one, but still pretty low!
Lots of pics at the links below. And no, this car isn't for sale. I host the pictures at my dealer website, but you will see it is in the "private collection" area along with the other '80s GM stuff. Reliving my childhood!

in 85 you could order silver with red trim and most ive seen have red interior. i could b wrong tho and it might have been avalible with othe interior colors. the only other year silver was avalible on the IROC was 88 when they offered the charcoal grey. hope that helps a lil.

On the IROC-Z only, the silver was available only in 85 and the grey was only available in 88. The colors were available for other models in other years. The silver and grey are very different colors so silver was not available in 88.

Is the '88 version what we used to call Gunmetal Grey? I'm working with a guy to try to agree on a price for a nice driver quality one now. I see a blown big block temporarily residing where its original 5.0 TPI currently is. You can't do cool stuff like that with a really low mileage original. I need a car I can actually tinker with ...

It is silver metallic - You are correct. It's that water based enamel, which still looks surprisingly excellent after all these years. I suppose not spending time in the sun has some advantages ...

I've never seen one with a red interior (which means nothing, especially since I've never seen another silver Camaro in person), but mine was black. By the way, drive it or it's worth zero. I mention that only because mine has 150,000 miles, and I love every minute behind the wheel.

one of my favorite combos on a thirdgen is silver with a tasteful red interior (it's real easy to turn from tasteful to tacky with red interiors). It's an absolutely beautiful combination.

According to the above mentioned brochure, the Sport Coupe, Z28 and IROC came in Vinyl (Std) and Cloth (Opt) in the following colors: Black, Copper (NA IROC), Gray, Red, and Saddle.
Optional Custom Interior. Sport Coupe, Z28, and IROC had cloth in Black, Copper (NA IROC) Gray, Red, and Saddle.
Z28 and IROC with optional L/S Conteur came with cloth in black (Gray cloth seat and door insert), Red, and Saddle. This latter is probably the so-called Camaro, Camaro, Camaro interior.
The White Book mentions that the recommended interiors for a silver car were Black, Gray, Red, and Saddle (but that special order deviations may have been built).

All the Silver Metallic Irocs I have seen do have red interior. My dad's old H.0. 5spd had the red, which dark red faded stripes.( dont know how to explain it), the one on ebay had the Camaro Camaro Camaro Camaro, and Midwest's has leather.
Midwest, that's quite a collection you have there. I'd give anything to have your collection.

I wish mine had leather - It's actually just the vinyl, but it is in perfect shape. The car was ordered with some strange combinations ...
LG4, but Posi and 4 wheel disk brakes?
Vinyl interior, but things like the overhead console and power mirrors?
The t-tops make sense though ...

I was wondering about whether it was leather or vinyl Midwest. So you have the custom interior without the upgrade to cloth. She is very nice. And I was thinking the same thing LG4/Auto combo in such a heavily optioned car.And it's interesting where the fog light switch is in '85.I gues this is done because the rear wiper was still an option

Coolram, like you said - There's some odd combinations in this car. I asked the original owner why he didn't choose TPI. He said he didn't trust it, and wanted a carb. I asked why he didn't order the H.O. version, and he said he wanted an Auto, and didn't think you could get the H.O. unless you wanted a 5-sp. Okay ...
Leonard, I've had a few dozen great cars over the past couple of decades. Some cars you drive, some you race, and some you collect. It's only when you try to make the same car do 2-3 of those different things that I don't enjoy them as much. Some of these cars are like artwork to me, and they have some nostaglic pull for one reason or another.

Mike you hit the nail on the head as to each being a form of artwork or having the nostalgic meaning for times past. And whoever ordered my '83 Z checked off every box on the option list except the rear wiper and engine block heater. They ordered the LU5/Auto when they could have gotten the HO/5 speed probably for the same reason as the original owner of your '85.
And Leonard your collection sounds most impressive too.

Not that it will excite you much, but I also have a 1929 Model A, Business Coupe. I have several friends with A's so they talked me into one a couple years ago. I am actually impressed with "Henry's Lady" from 75+ years ago.

My 85 is optioned very strangely also. It came with the LB9 and 4 wheel disk brakes, even a 3.42 gears, but no posi. It came with most comfort options, including A/C, premium seating with the power driver seat, power windows, locks, cruise, tilt, overhead console, yet came with just the AM radio and no power mirrors.

Jim, now that is odd! Here mine sits with a Posi it doesn't need, and you have the one that should have had it. Weird to have AM radio with all those other creature comforts. Maybe he liked bad quality country stations!
Leonard, the "A" sounds cool. I've never owned one, but they are fascinating in their own way.

But, Jim, you did get the amazing console clock, righto! My 85 was equipped with most everything (no overhead or limited slip though those have been added) to include the famous/infamous clock and rear washer and wiper.

I didn't know you could delete things like the side body molding, but now I do. Someone posted before that my car was missing that molding - Nope. It does however have the rear door lip protection strip. Weird ...

I love the console clock too! When I first got the car I hated it and planned to pull it out and make a cup holder out of that space, but I'm glad that I kept it. The clock really gives my car a unique appearance. Near the bottom of my very long "to do" list is to make a white overlay for the clock so that it will match all of my other gauges.
