Cars with a speed limiter

Were the tires a deciding factor in limiting the speed to 115MPH?? Also any info to back this up.
Thanks

The Tires MAY have had a part to play in the Speed limiter. I think in many ways it probably had to do with the fact that A) they could do it, B) it was inexpensive with the advent of the ECM as it was all built in. C) I would think that most people would never venture above 100Mph anyways that if you did, at least they could limit the cars speed, and the Police could catch you.

Fortunately you can program it out, Unfortunately you will get a different answer from different sources. I would imagine the police would tell you one thing, GM could tell you something else, and the tire companies something altogether different. Unfortunately you will probably never get a straight answer...

Case in point: Consider the "Child safety Windows" on 4 door cars, it was this HUGE deal and people thought that the Big three were out for there best intrest etc... As it turns out becuase the cars were getting shorter, and the rear door partially overlaped the rear wheel well the window would slide down only part way. To overcome this they would use a small quarter window so the roll down portion would slide down further. Then they discovered they could save money by only making one window instead of two. Unfortunately it would only roll down part way, in order to sell this new problem they came up with the idea that it was for child safety.

Its all how you look at it.

91 Z28 5.7, no speed limiter for sure. Fastest I did was 140 MPH at 4500 RPM and was still climbing. Had to let off due to the stop sign was coming up reeeaaallllly fast.

Then what, pray tell, are the guys on the DIY PROM board talking about when they say you can remove the speed limiter code from the PROM?

The top speed limitation was 115mph... you'll know it when you hit it because suddenly it'll stop revving and start slowing down till it drops to about 110mph or you let off the gas and hit it again.

I've personally hit the limiter on a 91 3.1 and a 91 305tbi, I wouldn't be surprised to hit the limiter in a 305 TPI car without Z-rated tires either. To the best of my knowledge carbed cars didn't have any limitation and I've never heard of a 350TPI hitting a limiter. It seems there's always some clown that swears his car that should have a limiter went 200 miles per hour, but then there's also people who believe that the X-files isn't on TV anymore because of a real gov't conspiracy.

Incidently, mid-late 90's AWD Astro Vans with the Vortec 4.3 V6 have the same 115mph limiter, along with S10's, and likely countless other GM platforms.

The Carbed cars is almost impossible to rev-limit, possibly 86 or 87 may be the exception, BUT since the computer cant technically tell the carb to shut off it may be an impossiblity as they had a mechanical fuel pump. My 87 had both fuel pumps incidently.

From most of the PROM data that I have looked at the availabilaity is there, and whether or not they used it seems to be determined. I know for a fact that most of the BINS I have looked at for TPI do not have it until 255 Mph... THat includes my original 87 305 TPI/M5, and an 87 L98 BINs.

Its hard to say what the Trans AM had when they were equiped wth 15" rims as I have never looked at the BIN. Likewise I have never looked at a Camaro BIN from that year with lesser tires. I know that the Trans AM when equiped with 15" tires used a different Broadcast code for the CHip.

If it takes aprox 15 seconds to go a 1/4 mile at aprox 100 MPH and an additional 15 seconds to get to 140 ('cause that's all it took was 30 seconds), a road that's aprox a mile long between stop signs would be enough room. Maybe it wasn't a mile, maybe it was 3/4's of a mile. Maybe it was a mile and a half. Maybe I'll have to go and see how far the road actually is. Maybe in Wisconsin, there are too many stop signs?
