Anybody know how late 1984 models were built to?

Does anybody know how late 1984 model year F-bodies were built to?

I have what appears to be a VERY late Van Nuys build 1984 Trans Am. It has a build date of 8-29 according to the build sheet I found in the car. I have found date codes of 7/31/84 and 8/11/84 on some components and the body tag shows 08E for fifth week of August. The sequence number is 273114 which seems very high to me too.

I'm beginning to wonder if my T/A is one of the last off the assembly line ... It wasn't titled until April 1985 with only 5 miles on the odometer.

That's strange. You'd think with a build date that late that it would be an 85 model.

Me too. Normally the plants shut down at the end of July and go on hiatus for 2-4 weeks.

I'm thinking that since there were major changes for 1985 and some people might not like them, they ran the 84 model year a little longer to get the sales. Back then GM was still running Norwood and Van Nuys so they could have already been producing 1985 Camaros and Firebirds at Norwood while producing 1984 models up to the last minute at Van Nuys.

I know this is the case for 1973. I've seen documented early August 1973 build Firebirds.

The exhaust manifolds on my 84 TA have a date code of 8/84, and my sequence number is 243122. I also have the build sheet, but some of it is not legible.

Well according to the production numbers 1984 was the best year for the 3rd generation FBody. Perhaps GM had to extend the production run to fill orders that had been placed for 1984 models.

1984 camaro production : 261, 591
1984 firebird production : 128, 304

1982t-topTA -- where are the date codes on the manifolds? I'm a Pontiac guy so I don't know where that stuff is on Chebbie engines.

Jproz1167 -- My car is titled as 1984 model year but it wasn't titled until April 1985. Can you look at the body tag on the radiator support and see what your build week is? Its in the first line of the body tag.

Anybody know the breakdown between Van Nuys and Norwood 1984 F-bodies?
The sequence number starts at 100001 so my car is the 173,114 F-body off the Van Nuys assembly line for 1984.

Its a 4 digit code stamped in a little box, pretty much right in the middle by the casting number.

From 82-87 TOTAL Production is useless when trying to figure out where your car sits within a production year at an assembly plant...

For all of your enjoyment here is the breakdown for Van Nuys and Norwood. This information is FROM GM, and should be accurate since its from an offical document.

1984
Van Nuys 77542
Norwood 50762

1985
Van Nuys 54874
Norwood 41006

1986
Van Nuys 59110
Norwood 51373

1987
Van Nuys 35610
Norwood 53013

FYI, Chevrolet production numbers start at 100001 and Pontiac Production numbers start at 200001.

Car: 1983 Pontiac Trans Am
Engine: 305 H.O. VIN "H" LG4 (For now...)
Transmission: 5 Speed Manual
The only thing I can add to this is my 15th Anniversary 1984 TA was built the 1st week of April in 1984 and the sequence number is 231661...

Hope this helps!

P.S.
I'll try and dig up what I can on my other 1984 I had. It was a regular Firebird, orig. came with an LG4, Overdrive Auto Tranny, non-posi rear and a hard top... Maybe I can find one of my old registrations or something...

EDIT: By the way, I have a Norwood Plant made car... Just read the sequence number vs. assembly plant post below by okfoz

My 84 T/A was built 7/84. Seq # is 24XXXX.

I looked at another 84 T/A yesterday (my cars clone, same color, same decals, etc...) Built 5/84, Seq # was 23XXXX.

Edit: Both are Norwood cars.

Keep in mind that the sequence number is different for each of the Plants. For example I have 2 1987 Formulas, on from Van Nuys, one from Norwood.

The norwood car has a ship date of 6-24-87 and the sequence number is 46***
The Van Nuys car has a ship date of 6-26-87 and the sequence number is 30***

John

I re-read your post looks like our cars were built around the same time, mines a red/gold fully loaded one, it was ordered with every option except rear wiper because it had factory louvers, aside from that it had everything, I bought it new in march of 85 in minnesota, then it was spared and spent the rest of it's life in southern california.

Speaking of VIN numbers.. I have a couple questions... I have an '85 Firebird and an '88 Firebird Formula.

The '85 has a production number of 640417.. I thought they all started with 1 or 2 for Camaro or Firebird.. But a 6??

The '88 has 238261... Meaning it was the 38,261st Firebird off the line in Van Nuys?

Well, thats all for starters.. thanks.
