Here is a video I found of a 1987 T-Top Iroc with a 350. It has the floor lights.

Re: Underdash plastics
This post was started years ago and still there is no set pattern for the hush panels.
I've seen quite a few videos like that where collector companies are selling mint/near mint examples of IROC-Zs and Z28s more recently. Pretty cool but strange to see also when you remember them new and plentiful. His information was pretty good, although he claimed it was 100% stock and it didn't have stock exhaust tips.

Both my '83 and '89 (of which I am the original owner) have the hush panels on both sides.
My '89 however does not have the ALDL cover. I wonder if that was common?

Whaddya know?!?!
Reading this thread bugged me enough to make me look under the driver's seat of my '89 with a flashlight. Guess what I found? The ALDL cover jammed in between the power seat gizmos. That's where it's been the past 22 years!

Ha! Who the heck knows. I've been in the ALDL a couple of times with my high tech paper clip, but never remember removing the cover.
I also found those rubber door edge guard thingies. But I knew I put those there after removing them on the first day I got it home.

Re: Underdash plastics
My 89 iroc has the 350 and bose stereo. I'm the second owner and I got it with 44,000 miles on it when I bought it. It didnt have the hush panels and there is the plastic L-shaped brackets for the courtesy lights under the dash. This will probably be one of those riddles that will never be solved why some have the the panels and some dont.

Re: Underdash plastics
I suspect there are a couple things going on here.
1. Some original hush panels were never re-installed after service.
My carb-ed '82 T/A had hush panels on both sides. I was the original owner.
As I recall, the passenger's side was a real PIA to re-install. I suspect that any
dealership servicing these would not have re-installed them.
2. Some people have complained about them interfering with the driver's feet.
I don't recall if there was ever a GM campaign to remove them, but if a customer complained about them, removal would be their first step.
I don't remember if my Formula 350 had them, I never replaced the heater core.

I think you're probably right. Some of these cars never had them to begin with, and others lost them along the way. I'm no Sasquatch but the panels have a habit of getting in the way of my shoes sometimes. Most people would never notice they're gone.

Re: Underdash plastics
When I got my IROC as a wedding gift from my bro-n-law, he told me the plastic in the hatch is for under the steering column. I was like uuhhhhhh, what??? I connect stereos and amps so I know that cars did not have a cover to hide the electricals under the dashboard. So after 7 years of having the IROC parked, I began to restore the IROC. I got an 86 with the OEM Bose kick panels. I only had the driverside hush panel and no passengerside. According to the free car fax report, Im the 7th owner. So I dont know what my camaro had in the past. I can say this though. I had hatch light, or under hood light when I recieved my gift.

Re: Underdash plastics
I'm really puzzled by this. I have an 89 RS and it has the courtesy lights mounted on the little L brackets. I bought a passenger side hush panel on ebay, and the courtesy light plugs right in. I havn't found a driver side one yet, or affordable light covers. I am confused how some of the passenger side panels are perfectly contoured to the dash where they mount, and some (like the one I bought without realizing) have a tab that sticks out for the screw on the right side of the panel, and leaves a gap between the right side of the dash and the hush panel. You cant see it unless you look up under the dash. I wish i would have got the contoured one. Why are they different? The firebird driver side ones look different than the camaro, will they fit? Why are the passenger ones different?

Re: Underdash plastics
There are several different style for the Camaro's as well as for the firebirds. For Camaro's, the passengerside was made with a light hole socket type. That was to be used with the normal thin kick panel. As for MY kick panels, they are thick and bulky because they are the Bose kick panels. For my passengerside, the Bose kick panels are
So thick that they cover the light hole socket. With that said, instead of designing a new panel with the light modified more towards the middle, GM made these little L shaped plastic light holders that can easily be screwed into the kick panel.

Re: Underdash plastics
FWIW my 91 Z28 has them. The part no. is 10125124 on the main driver's side panel and 10125125 on the fuse box door. The panel has a round hole for what I'd assume was for a courtesy light but the car has no lights under the dash. It's a Group 1 car with AC but no power options.
I couldn't see a part number for the passenger one. I imagine it's under the panel. One day if I get time I'll drop it and see.

Re: Underdash plastics
Man this is a trip! Now I finally know what that stupid hole is for in my hush panels!
I've had a 90 RS with the standard options package and I currently own a 92. If I'm remembering correctly they both had the same panels. Neither had any lamps installed though. I have found some disconnected wiring connectors under there.
Anybody have a pic of the connector that plugs into the lamp assembly? I'm going to hook these up just for the heck of it.

Re: Underdash plastics
Yeah that should work.... I stumbled across this thread because I'm working in that area right now to install a keyless entry system. According to all of the wiring docs I've found, the underlight harnesses tapped into the door switch for power anyway.
That's why I found this thread.... I was like "What underlights?"

Re: Underdash plastics
Correction... the wires for the door switch only control ground, the white is for the dome light's ground and the tan is for the door buzzer.
I found a mysterious plug in my wiring harness that comes out just about where the lamp socket should go. It looks like a relay socket, but I dunno what it could be to considering that everything in my car is working. I'll post a few pics later this evening. I tried poking around with it via a multimeter but I heard the door buzzer at one connection and stopped before I blew a fuse.

Re: Underdash plastics
Yeah they do, but maybe the term is throwing you off.
You know where if you open the door with the key in the ignition it chimes? That's the door buzzer. It doesn't go off unless the key is in.

Re: Underdash plastics
No sir. I have no vats. There is one connector that is of female type on the driverside kickpanel area. But Ive looked ever where for a male connector last year but I was never succesful in locating that male connector. Perhaps that is the one. But Ill look around again tomorrow.

Re: Underdash plastics
Well that is probably the difference then. Mine does and while it buzzes if the lights are on regardless, in terms of the door being open, it starts to buzz the moment that little chip on the key makes contact.

Re: Underdash plastics
Well I don't have a clue then.
Anyway, this pic is awful but can anybody identify this mystery socket?
It is just to the right of the fuse box and comes out almost exactly where the hole for the non-existant lamp assembly is. It looks like the socket for a relay. It's got a yellow, brown, light blue and green wire. As I said earlier, grounding one of the pins started the door buzzer.

Re: Underdash plastics
Thats probably a relay socket to trigger a car alarm. That's all I can think of. But then again, my 86 doesn't have such a socket. So it may be a feature for your Camaro. What year is your Camaro again? Also what color are those wires? I can look up a wiring schematic for you if you like. But if it's aftermarket, I may not have any luck finding the wiring. What other wires is it connected to?
#135
Re: Underdash plastics
It's a 92 RS. I know the 92s have some some wiring changes that are unique to all third gens, but I don't know what exactly these changes are.
I suppose it could be to a car alarm, but afaik my wiring harness is 100% stock aside from repairs and mods I've done myself.

Re: Underdash plastics
Kind on the same note. The CAMAROS with the courtesy lights: how many have the plastic dome covers over the courtesy lights? For years now, I believed only the Firebirds had the cover. Now I read above that the the Berlinettas also had them.
I also had another person telling me his original IROC had them but in owning numerous Camaros/IROCs, none had the covers but every Firebird I have owned or inspected did have the covers....
Is my assumption incorrect that the covers over the lights were Berlinettas & Firebirds only.

Re: Underdash plastics
After reading through this thread again many years later I came up with a possible reason why. It's a long shot but is it possible it was for weight savings? Now I know these don't weigh much but maybe losing the pound or two made the difference for the epa, and there are basically one of the only interior options you can remove without noticing something is missing immedietly when looking inside. Since most 350 cars already weighed a lot maybe this tiny thing helped out.
