1987 GTA with 48k Original Miles
*** Additional Undercarriage pictures posted on 7/12/2023 ***
I am moving to California (from Huntsville, Alabama) and would like to sell my Garage Queen 1987 Trans Am GTA so I won't have to ship it cross-country.
A pending offer from a dealer fell through because they could not meet payment requirements.
*** Price is set at $17,500. *** OBO
Give me your best offer, if interested.
Lot's of NOS parts and parts in great shape will come with it.
It is an auto with 5.7L, and has 48,812 miles on it...no T-Tops.
I bought it from an Indiana dealer off of eBay nearly 6 years ago.
It was far better than I expected, and the previous owner documented everything he did to this car on the internet.
I can send you all info from the previous owner if you wish.
It is in pristine condition, has never been wrecked and has been repainted professionally at some point in the past (I think)
It was originally bright red and was repainted the same. You cannot tell it was repainted though because the job was done so well.
All original GTA emblems and side moulding look great...like new.
The car also has dark tint applied to all windows (except the windshield, of course) It was a great tint job, with no bubbling to be seen, anywhere.
As soon as I took possession of it, I replaced the plugs with factory correct Delco double platinums.
I replaced all four rotors, calipers, and pads with Delco/GM parts.
I also replaced the two original front brake hoses since they had swollen over the years and affected braking performance.
The brake fluid was completely flushed and replaced with fresh.
It has the electronic digital cluster and electronic A/C controls.
I also replaced the distributor and cap.
At some point in the past, the original rear "wing" (which commonly goes bad) was replaced with an aftermarket Fiberglas wing. (which was repainted when the car was)
The fiber board headliner was also replaced at some point in the past with and ABS-backed headliner.
It has the original electro-mechanical auto-dimming mirror that works perfectly.
The original "build label" with all options installed is still intact inside the center console. (See Photo Below)
The A/C was converted to R-134 refrigerant in the past, instead of the original R-12, and still blows cold.
The engine bay is immaculate and the original hood insulator is still in great condition.
The original AM/FM/Cassette radio was replaced by me with a rebuilt, all push button "UT4" totally digital factory model with an AUX input.
I still have the original radio, and that will go with the car.
What will also go with the car is NEW heavy duty Delco/GM gas charged charged shocks, specifically for this car (worth a lot)
I also have an NOS fog light to replace the passenger fog light, which has a small chip in the glass lens, but is not noticeable, and works fine.
I have numerous other new parts for the car (some NOS) and I still have the original black GM logo floor mats, which are in great shape.
Oh, and it has the original honeycomb wheels, center caps, and lug nut covers.
It also has newly installed BF Goodrich Comp T/A 2 tires with less than 2,500 miles on them.
The things that I know have been updated/changed on the car are:
The exhaust system was replaced by the previous owner using a Hooker performance exhaust, including Hooker shorty headers, Hooker mufflers, and chrome exhaust tips.
It sounds very deep and throaty on hard acceleration, but does not sound raspy whatsoever and does not drone at all.
It is still in wonderful condition and turns heads while accelerating but is very quiet while cruising. I love it.
An MSD HE electronic ignition system was also installed by the previous owner, and works perfectly.
The original Delco injectors were removed by me, cleaned, and reinstalled.
I also installed red spark plug wires when I got the car because of a slight misfire under load. The new wires corrected that issue.
It has a new, lifetime warranty alternator from AdvanceAuto. This warranty will transfer with the car.
I replaced the original power antenna with a rebuilt original, and it works perfectly.
I also replaced the original radiator cap with the correct Delco/GM cap because the rubber seal had gotten hard.
Actually EVERYTHING in the car works perfectly, even the pull-down motor for the rear hatch, and the pop-up headlights.
The only thing on the car that does not work perfectly is Reverse in the transmission. It does not engage smoothly if you give it a lot of gas after shifting to reverse. It engages a little hard in that case.
If you go easy on first give it gas after shifting, it engages perfectly normally.
I never got that looked at because it never caused me any issues to drive as long as I didn't give it a lot of gas after shifting to reverse.
In all forward gears, the transmission shifts smoothly without any slipping or harshness whatsoever, including Overdrive.
I will include a complete Auto X-ray 5000 OBD I Code Analyzer with real-time data. (This has multiple adapter cables for many vehicle brands that have OBD1 and OBD2 computers).
It was great in helping to identify that my injectors needed to be cleaned.
I also have a digital ignition system analyzer as well that will go with the car.
I have NUMEROUS other NOS/NEW parts for the car that I bought as they were available, "just in case" I might need them.
Everything I have for the car will go with the car.
I really don't want to sell this car to a dealer, for next to nothing, only to have him resell it for a LOT more.
The dealer would have to do nothing to this car to resell it, that's how nice it is.
I will be posting more pictures in coming days, or just ask me for one you would like in the meantime.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
Thanks!

Re: 1987 GTA with 48k Original Miles
Here are more photos of the underside.
Best I could do with this 63 year old body laying on the concrete of my garage.
There are spots on the concrete under the rear of the car but those were there from the previous home-owner's car.
If there is any rust anywhere, I could only see slight surface rust on some of the exhaust components and a couple of other places.
The previous owner stated that it never saw snow when he had it, and I have avoided driving it in the rain since I've had it. I doesn't snow hardly at all in Alabama, and I've never taken it out in winter.
This car truly is a nice one. Not like brand new because of the mileage, but as close as you will get.

Re: 1987 GTA with 48k Original Miles
For those interested, attached is a blog (PDF File) from the previous owner (before he sold it to a dealer) documenting all of the things he did to the car from the time that HE bought it.
When I bought it, I did a lot to it as well, which you can read about in my main write-up.
The pictures are no longer there since it was several years ago but the chronological write-up of all his efforts is.
*** NOTE *** The exhaust cutout that was installed by the previous owner has be removed by me. I thought it was ridiculous to have it on such a nice car!
Happy Reading!

Re: 1987 GTA with 48k Original Miles
Yes, I had one dealer offer me the full asking price but I did not accept because he was not the best offer. I had another dealer call me and offer $18k for the car, but was unable to meet my payment terms, so I passed. I decided to change the car's asking price to $17,500 in light of the two really quick dealer offers and the fact that I have lots of NOS parts and test equipment that will go with it, including:
Autoxray EZ Scan 5000 OBDI & OBDII realtime code scanner/data analyzer kit
GTC TA500 Ignition Analyzer
VEVOR Automotive Smoke Leak Detector Smoke Machine (Used to track down and fix a small vacuum leak)
and more...

Re: 1987 GTA with 48k Original Miles
The OBO can technically run both ways. If it's less than the asking price, it's called "negotiation". If it's above the asking price then we call it "bidding".
To keep from offending members, he should have started high, for example, $22,500, and worked from that number. People HATE having the price jacked up on them. It makes folks feel like the seller is out to gouge them...and people don't respond well to that.
The bottom line is, it's the sellers car, and he can handle the sale any way he likes, good, bad, or otherwise.

Re: 1987 GTA with 48k Original Miles
I appreciate the feedback on my changing the price.
It's true that I should have done better research on the potential value of my car before originally listing it for $14,995.
It's also true that my INCREASE of the asking price may have offended some, but the truth of the matter is that I never received an offer from anyone besides the two dealers.
No one else on this forum gave me an offer.
Sure, a few on this board were "interested", but none even gave me a best offer when it was listed for $14,995.
It may seem that I am greedy here, but I just really want to get a fair price for my car. I really HATE selling it but I have been over everything, time, and time again, about moving it to Northern California, vs selling it here in Alabama.
I do, more than anything, want it to go to someone who will take care of it for what it is.
But, I don't want to give it (and all of the items that go with it), away.

I would have offerred you a good number if you were closer to me. To keep your word as a man, my dad always said "dont burn bridges for extra $$$, it will come back and bite you in the *** later. It is not worth it."
Imo nobody from here who are loyal to 3rd gen fbodies will not buy it now.

Its not being greedy. It is being a man and being honest. He admitted he should researched it but he got greedy.
Imo I do not think there were 2 dealer offers on the table. If there were this car would have been sold to one of them.
Just my $0.02

Re: 1987 GTA with 48k Original Miles
You, on the other hand have never given me an offer, even at the lower, initial asking price.
You can state all the "IMO"s you want, but they are simply your opinion only, and NOT fact.
I never slighted you or directly attacked you, so why are you doing it to me????
It's not like I turned down your offer, because you never gave me an offer.
What is driving you to slam me with every comment?
I'm only trying to sell my car, and get a fair price for it when I do.

I stated I would have given u an offer if u were closer.
U need to stick to your word as a man and sell it it at what the initial price was.
This happens in all aspects of selling and buying.
If I were you I would relist it here at $15k obo or relist it somewhere else .

Most of the guys on here are tire-kickers anyway. I posted a FireChicken I had for sale on here with a LOW price all the tire-kickers kicked the tires. I sold it on BaT for more. List it on BringATrailer! It will do well. It's the only place IMHO to sell cars like these rare, low-mile beauties.

Re: 1987 GTA with 48k Original Miles
Here are some more pictures of the undercarriage, as requested.
Seeing the pictures reminded me that the previous owner had Spohn tubular subframe connectors professionally installed to stiffen the woefully weak factory uni-body design.
They cannot be seen from outside the car. You can only see them from underneath.
For this reason alone, the body on this car does not "creak" when it is subjected to torsion/twisting, like when pulling up a driveway at an angle.
It also has no stress cracking anywhere that I could see in any body panels or sheet metal.
Here is a link to the Spohn webpage for this product: http://www.spohn.net/shop/1982-1992-...-Top-Cars.html
