Re: Firebird H6054 HID Retrofits
While I admire your honesty, the point is to inform people that they are not doing it right and therfore hopefully resulting in less people on the road who don't give a $hit and want to do it cheap and wrong. Well that's the hope.
While I'm glad you aimed them down i still think a hundred dollars more will net you better light output and safety for others. Legally it's illegal to install HIDS in reflector housings... and I wish cops gave more tickets for it. Think about how much money can be made from all the idiots out there (mostly drivers and people who think it's cool to put them in there new cars) driving like this.

I don't think that's true, at least, it didn't used to be true, because some auto manufacturers have, in the past, released some models with HID in reflector housings from the factory. In general, however, it will be true because most HID did not come from the factory in reflector housings, and therein lies the legal issue: it's illegal to install any type of headlight on any car if that type of headlight wasn't originally offered for that car, either as standard equipment or as a factory option. There are no grey areas within this law.
Where 3rdgens are concerned, a sealed beam headlight was the only type of headlight ever offered from the factory, and, therefore, it's the only type of headlight that is legal for a 3rdgen, with halogen being the best sealed beam offered.
So none of the projector retrofits that people have done(no matter what the light source: HID, LED, halogen), none of the HID conversions in any type of housing, none of the replaceable bulb reflector housings, and none of any other type of conversions done on 3rdgens are legal. The products used for such conversions might be considered "DOT Compliant," even "DOT Approved," but that doesn't mean "legal." Not even the argument that they're "better" or "safer" carries any legal merit.
As far as police citing people for illegal headlights, I'd think that the officers, themselves, would have to be personally blinded to the point of being aggravated enough to want to turn around and pull you over. Or if you're pulled over for stupid driving(unfortunately, stupid drivers are too stupid to realize they're driving stupidly), then I suppose a walk-around in search of violations might produce a citation for your headlights. Otherwise, it's not likely that anyone would ever be pulled over just for headlights, especially if they're not blinding, so I wouldn't let such things frighten anyone out of doing their conversions/retrofits.

While there might have been very few cars with HIDS in reFlector housings the point of that was that the reflector housings were once again designed for HID bulbs. Most if not all reflector halogen headlights are not actually designed for HIDS bulb and therfore its light output. So basically don't do it.
While changing the headlights from stock is illegal there are correct ways to do it. The point of installing HID and the correct HID projectors is that the cops won't pull you over as the headlights are projecting the light Correctly and below the cutoff line... if the light doesnt go above the cutoff line then it shouldn't be in anyone's eyes and therfore shouldn't be blinding and getting pulled over.

Re: Firebird H6054 HID Retrofits
Phillips used to make a DOT legal (true) HID retrofit for the 6054, I guess they stopped selling it because of lack of interest.
So technically DIY with a real project is not "legal" it most likely won't get you hassled or cited for it. Putting an HID bulb into a projector is wrong, illegal and should get more people cited

Hey guys, thought I would chime in. I have retrofitted PROJECTOR HIDs on my car. Check em' They are extremely superior to any other lights i've had on any car ever. Lol.
The guy who did this, makes them for firebirds too.
