Re: Carbon Hood Modification
Shiny, got a question, how rigid and light is that thing? I'm using what was originally a bolt on hood as a pin on, with the substructure removed, its impossibly hard to get on the car by myself between the flex, and weight, though mostly the size....camaro hoods always were huge...Just wondering how much easier to handle a CF hood would be.

Re: Carbon Hood Modification
Times I envy other performance cars with reasonably sized hoods, lol. I think over half the sheet metal used in our cars is in the hood haha.
Thanks for the info btw, I'm actually surprised it's not lighter though tbh, Mine weighs either 30 or 34 lbs(can't recall which) after I gutted it out, and now I just remembered yours is bolt on.
So probably would be like 10-15 for CF a pin on, I wonder what a true glass pin on weighs now.

Re: Carbon Hood Modification
is that solid carbon fiber or just a layer on top of fiberglass? i ask because VFN bolt on fiberglass hoods are 18lbs for flat and 22 for a 4" cowl? shouldn't the CF hood be much lighter?
looks good though, are you painting it or leaving it bare

Re: Carbon Hood Modification
Actually combining a base of fiberglass and a top layer of CF adds some of the fiberglasses durability to the otherwise fairly brittle carbonfiber.
I think the sheet metal used to make one hood is nowadays used to make one Smart...

Re: Carbon Hood Modification
would have to be a built t56 and a twin disk clutch setup. $$$$$
OUCH http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MCL-64033-00-07/
Then still looking at 1000+ on a t56.

Re: Carbon Hood Modification
Where did you get the hood? Did you have it made? I am actually looking into getting a mold made of an IROC hood and make my own carbon fiber hood. Depending on the cost of this thing I might just go down that path.

Re: Carbon Hood Modification
See the link above...
I have some different ideas for it; either paint the sides black and leave the middle carbon, or lightly tint the entire hood, but make so carbon still shows through.

Re: Carbon Hood Modification
That might be kind of cool actually. I've never been a fan of bare carbon, especially on a black car. It seems to stand out so much (and not in a good way). Even if you painted the outer edge and tinted the inner section...

Yup, it looks just right!!
I was worried about the pins but they look perfect. As always, nice job.

Re: Carbon Hood Modification
honestly, there are only a couple people on this board with a carbon hood, so the chances of finding a car in a particular color will be difficult.
a red car with a black hood will look similar and easier to find.

Re: Carbon Hood Modification
A blue candy pearl would look absolutely beautiful over the carbon. The Champ Car at work has all the bare carbon painted that way and it looks amazing. Also help with the hood yellowing.
