Alright I have an idea about re-routing the gas door to behind the license plate like second gens. Now I'd like to hear what kind of work it would involve. I'm also wondering about the tube that leads to the tank, is it steel or rubber or what? Is there anything that I can use to re-route the opening to behind the plate? some sort of flex tubing but made out of what? The only way I'll do this is if I opt to make some fiberglass quarter panels but I'm still alittle uneasy about it. It would definately clean up the look more though. Anyways give me your thoughts and comments on the idea.

In order to route the gas opening to behind the Lisence plate like a 2nd gen you would have to cut a hole through your "trunk" area. since the fuel tank sits right in front of that and pretty much flush with the floor. I can be done.. and it can be done to look nice.. you would just give up some of the space in that cubby hole. another problem you could run into.. is that the tank will never really be full.. since the tank sits about the same level as the rear plate. I believe anyhow..

I think this will end up being too big of a project.

The filler neck isn't flexible. You'll have to remove the tank, cut the the neck off, weld a new one on, cut a hole in the hump in the back of the car, weld the new filler neck on, run the neck (exposed to the interior of the vehicle) to the license plate area, create a safe mounting point for it, then fill the quarter panel.

I am trying to work out putting the filler behind the drivers side tail light... It sounds interesting but until i finish it i don't know how well its going to work. I figured by putting it behind the tail light i can save the trunk space as well as make a trick gas filler that you would really have to look around the car to figure out.

putting the filler behind the light has been done and does work.. the one thing that you have to figure out though is how to swing the light out and swing it back in and lock it down do it does not move and does look like it should

I think if you put a lid over your "trunk" area, so you have to lift up a plate to see the filler neck, it would be ok. you would lose that area, but I think filling that with N20 bottles or something would fill it nicely
I like the idea, if I really cared, i'd probably do it.

I have a drawing of how it would work with it behind the plate, and then one with it behind the tail light... i willl see if i can find them

I remembe seeing a pick of one behind the tail light at one time.. still looking for the routing drawings and such.. migh be on my other computer...*sigh* been a long time since i fired that one up lol

now extend that all the way back and you will have the filler neck for the "behind the tail light" setup.... that particular one is an ok deal. unless your hatch struts go out.. then filling up would be a major PITA

speaking of hatch struts WTF is the deal with the car in the picture?

thats easy.. the person took the hatch off when they were doing that. so the strut is basically just hanging by the mounting point at the top of the picture... it just happens to hang near that gas port... heh.. Personally.. I am going to put a fuel cell in mine.. which will still require me to open the hatch in order to fill the tank... unless i get mount it in such a way as to allow my to weld on a filler neck. at which point it would probably go out the erar somewhere... maybe not.. depends on what it looks like when i do it..

look at the length of the strut..... it's not a hatch strut.

looks like the hatch strut I have on my 83 and 84 z28... things are long... and that picture is of the back of the driver's side wheel well where most people have that little compartment.. not to mention look at the gas cap and then compare the size of a hatch strut that is fully extended to it..

so i cut my filler off the tank already to route it into the trunk area, but theres a vent tube inside, does the vent need to be connected?

anyone know what im talking about

It's a convertible and that would be a trunklid strut, no hatch present.
To be more specific.. it's Graboid's convertible when he shaved the gas filler door...
