I've searched and all that but everything seems to be so wishy washy. I greatly appreciate the advice.
soon I'll be making my exhaust. Engine is a 383, 470hp 500tq. im running 3" stainless, all tig welded, nice free flowing bends. Headman long tube headers. Plan on making a y, and following stock location up and over, muffler to a single pipe.
can y'all share your experiences, knowledge what have you and give me some ideas. I looked at flowmaster, laminar flow pro series but man, honestly, I am very ignorant when it comes to mufflers. I do know I'm right at the max for 3" but it is what it is. I dont want droning or crackling. Looking for a deep throaty sound.
Look for something with a big case 20” or so in length that’ll fit where the stocker does and is straight through like a Magnaflow. The cross flow mufflers that give the dual exhaust look tend to flow less.

Looking at spin tech. Just dont know what series.. dont want it crazy loud.
I have a spintech pro-street on my SRT10 truck and its not crazy loud. Its 1 step down from their loudest I got. It is very deep though. You can feel it.
The spintechs are not but sort of like a chambered muffler that they have baffles. Being so they may not flow as well as a straight through sound absorbing muffler like a Magnaflow. I have a spintech sportsman 3000 on my LT1 SS and love the way it sounds but that car isn’t my hot rod so if it costs a wee bit of power I don’t mind. That engine is stock cubes and maybe has within 100hp of your 383. With LT’s it’s loud but far from obnoxious. I had one of their prostreet 9000 mufflers on my old LQ4 Chevy 1500 and with the LT’s on it the muffler might as well have not been there. It sounded the same as an open pipe. It was obnoxious, dumped under the bed it was especially so.
Im not trying to push a certain brand of muffler but I am pushing for a design of muffler based on your engine. You’ve got a big cube engine with an undersized exhaust. I’m in the EXACT same boat as you with my Firebird. I’ve never even owned a Magnaflow but I’m just using it as an example because everyone know their name. Chambered and baffled mufflers just don’t tend to flow as well. Crossflow mufflers dont flow as well. Dual outlet may quieten down the sound a little bit with no cost to flow if both outlets are opposite the inlet. If one of the outlets is on the same end of the muffler as the inlet then it’s a crossflow muffler. Quieter chambered and baffled mufflers have more obstacles inside them to reflect the sound waves which means more resistance to flow where the straight through just have more sound absorption materials outside the perf pipe with no extra obstruction to flow. Choose your muffler based off those qualities.

I came across this chart when researching muffler CFM. While sound is a consideration, I was was looking for something that moved over 1000 CFM. Make of it what you will. I can't say I can recall where this came from as it's been in my files for better than a decade.
FWIW, I also have these. Again this is about CFM but it may twig an idea for you.
Good info guys. Greatly appreciate it. I need at least 1k cfm of flow. That chart narrows it right down for me. I've got a good foundation now to go off of.

Leaning towards dyno max ultra flow 17220. They make one that's 24" and 28" I believe? Have to look again. Maybe it was 32". Guess at 64 bucks if it's too loud it's not that big of a deal. Have more time in rewelding it up if I dont like it.
any last suggestsuggestions b4 I pull the trigger?
Well, if you can believe their marketing hype: "Dyno proven to flow up to 2,000 SCFM and support up to 2,000 horsepower" then lack of flow certainly won't be a problem.
Scientifically there's a difference between Standard Cubic Feet per Minute (SCFM) and what we've come to know a CFM, but with a number like 2000, I can't see the difference affecting your performance. Looks like more than enough to me.
So when you're done, you'll have to provide us with a sound clip.

Scfm is at absolute I believe. I'm sure u are aware tho. Yeah, 2000 seems like a lot, but should be more than adequate. If too loud I may put a 2nd inline smaller muffler, maybe in tunnel?? Guess we will have to see. Thabks skinny. Been a while. U helped a lot when I built this engine. I'll def post a clip.
