here is a pic of my heat riser valve that is unhooked no rod, no vacuum ,
in the pic the lever is all the way to the forward ????????? does this mean its closed or open thx

I can hardly even tell what's in that pic, let alone what position anything is in... looks like it was taken with an Apple product...

However all that may be, if the lever thing is pointing somewhat downward from level, then it's open. If it's pointed upwards, it's frozen closed. The weight on the end of it opens it when the vacuum from the thermal vacuum valve goes away. Not sure about "rod".

Why not just pop it off and see?

it is circled ...it is on the right side atm is this open or closed ?

That's just a terrible pic. I don't think "blowing up" will help it... kinda like, if you've got audio that's all distorted or muffled or sounds like mud, turning it up louder prolly won't make it sound any better...

In any case, when the weight falls down (or of it's the kind that doesn't have a weight, when the attachment point on the lever is downward as far as it will go) it's open.

The valve itself is asymmetrical. (and besides that, it's not the same on both sides either) It's MUCH larger on the "half" (actually more than half) on the side of the shaft that pressure against it would tend to open it, and MUCH smaller than half of its area on the side that pressure would tend to close it. If it's free to move, the pressure of the exh gas will tend to force and hold it open.

Pop it off and look at it.

When vacuum is applied to the vacuum diaphragm, it pulls the rod which opens the heat riser valve.

In the time it's taken you to take photos, attach them to a post and then wait for a reply, you could have jacked up the car, dropped the y-pipe and determined if the heat riser valve was stuck open or closed.

Just saying.....

With no vacuum applied, the valve is in the open position. In the open position, the pivot pin where the rod goes to should be facing the firewall. In your picture this looks to be open.
