stuck in header hell! need help!

well today i found out that my hooker shorty's wont work on my new 350 i'm building since it has D ports and not oval (or round) like stock. after navigating the summit website i came across only 2 possible options to fit in my 87 T/A:
Sanderson CC3DP-P
and
Sanderson CC3DP-SEC
I've never heard of Sanderson headers before and was wondering if anyone has ever used them and how good they are. it doesnt seem like i have much of a choice and i'll probably go with the SEC model since theyre silver ceramic paint. Just looking to see if anyone has any other options or any opinions on these headers, cuz right now i'm not too happy i overlooked the possibility to reuse my headers.

Although apparently, according to the description, Sanderson headers don't require gaskets....which I wouldn't trust, personally

Re: stuck in header hell! need help!

ahhh....and to make it worse, the only ones summit lists (the 2 in the above post) are 1 1/2" (my hookers are 1 5/8") and the collectors are 2.5", and my hookers were 3" collectors, which i had bought a Y-Pipe to fit that. so essentially my Y-Pipe wont work either.

Yes they do...but no, I don't have a part number for my specific ones. I can say that they are D-port longtubes and fit just fine.

If you navigate their website you can find them, also a quick email to their customer service (or phone call) would hook you up.

Mmk, I don't see why they wouldn't have shorty headers too that would work. Well, my longtubes went in before the engine (they were tied up, one on each fender well) and then once the engine was bolted up we just untied them and bolted them up, no issues.

If installed with the engine already in I'd say that you'd have to try to shoehorn them in from underneath unless you take out some of the accessories that would be in your way up top.

Also, I'm running true duals off of my headers.

do you have a Y-pipe or anything for the headman headers that you put in? or did you just do dual pipes? i'd like to somehow use my Y-pipe since i dont quite have enough money set aside to redo my whole exhaust system.

ah, disregard this post.

I just have the dual pipes all the way out and dumped before the rear axle. I think people on here have done longtubes with a Y-pipe though, I'm sure there's a way to fab it up with what you already have.

Re: stuck in header hell! need help!

before you buy new headers, have you laid the gasket for your headers up to the "d" port heads? chances are they'll probably work fine.
now if it was the other way around, you'd have a problem.
check out this thread describing the same thing your dealing with.

Those are for a 2nd gen firebird and wont fit, they are also for a Pontiac motor.

Mark.

PS. My heads are D ports and I use HED-68470 headers and HED-17478 y pipe and they fit great. I also modified the Y pipe with a 3 inch outlet.

ok, you guys are pretty certain of this? i just dont want to put the headers together and have to take them out again. these things are such a pain in 3rd gens and i dont want to have to tear this all apart again. what gasket should i get then? round port gaskets or D port gaskets?

Yeah kinda... some of the tubes look more round then others, I use the Percy's aluminium square port reusable gaskets and have never had a leak. My heads are the Summit 200cc aluminium's that are Brodix IK200's.

that is good to hear, i guess i can get away with using these headers then. thanks everyone for stopping my melt down and making me feel somewhat back on budget for this build / swap lol

Mine are the sum-162111, they have the 200cc intake ports and yours are the 170cc's but the headers should still be fine.

Re: stuck in header hell! need help!

In the end you can do what you want, I wouldn't put regular headers on D-port heads. Sure they'll work short-term but I don't think you will get a good seal and will just have to swap them out later.

Re: stuck in header hell! need help!

You can always trim the gaskets , in fact I would elongate the holes in the gaskets anyway to prevent mismatch and get Max flow

I would not get any headers that don't offer a matching ypipe, it makes life much easier

Re: stuck in header hell! need help!

i am thinking i'll get D port gaskets and see if theres any need to clean it up a little more for the headers. I'll see how well this works. if you guys are saying this should work fine, i know people on this site have more time, experience and knowledge than me lol

Re: stuck in header hell! need help!

using round port headers on d-port heads is actually a good idea. it utilizes the flat part of the "d" to help prevent reversion. that's kind of the whole theory behind d-port heads any way. JMO.

Re: stuck in header hell! need help!

I'm glade I don't come to this board to much, the inexperience people
giving advise good Lord, just have to wonder how anyone gets anything done on there cars, D-port cylinder heads..........oh my gosh the headers
are not d-port I can't put them on it what do I do , oh my gosh, yo
bro I wouldn't do it, it has to match up................shaking my head.

I think I saw couple of good responses, seems like the ones who know
about cars and engines and performance don't get the respect.

D-port heads take the same header as any other head.

So bolt on any damn header you want and be done! Holy crap.

The only issue would be if the are RAISED ports then this gives
certain headers issues with install, because the ports have been RAISED.

just because you have d-port heads don't mean crap when it comes to header selection, still use the correct primary dia size and move the hell on.

which gasket, use the proper gasket that you would use for the header.PERIOD

GEE the inexperience blows my mind on this board.

No need to get in a tizzy over it all.

Sure round port headers work on D-port heads, in the same sense you can use a pair of channel locks to pull a baking pan out of the oven-it works, but it's not what was made for it.

to each his own, but no need to bash the people saying that the OP should put the correct parts on to fit his application.
