Is the SLP TOTL too restrictive?
Just wondering if my current exhaust setup is holding me back. I have edelbrock headers, 2.5" y-pipe, 3" I-pipe, and lastly the SLP TOTL muffler. I've been told on numerous occasions that I should get more flow then what it allows. The pipes are each 3"X2" kind of oval shaped. Also, some think its a V6 or 305 exhaust due to the smaller pipes out the left side that is until they hear it.
Would like a 4" mufflex system work better? Just trying to weigh cost vs negligible gain.

Let people think what they want. 12 years after the SLP 2onl I still get thumbs up on the sound. Also nothing wrong with the flow and I would stay away from the coffee can look.

I agree on the sound. I think its sounds really good. I also don't like the coffee can look, but mine seems unlike other yours. You have the more round and I've got the oval smushed shape.

Re: Is the SLP TOTL too restrictive?
Looking at the picture, it seems that something is not correct. My SLP system is all Stainless Steel and does not show rust. Also check the picture showing the two tubes from the SLP muffler. My guess is you have a look alike and NOT a true 3" SLP cat back system.

Re: Is the SLP TOTL too restrictive?
Now that makes sense. It must be some sort of knock off brand. It was on the car when I bought it years ago and always assumed it was real.
I do like the look of the stainless though. However, finding a real one might be hard to do.

Slp did make a two on the left that looked like that. I have some photos of an old SLP catalog that has the TOTL system and it looks just like what you have. Be sure and check before you ditch it.

Re: Is the SLP TOTL too restrictive?
The only SLP 2OTL I know of is this one in the picture. I have it installed on my car. Also if it is not Stainless Steel it is NOT SLP.

I left some stickers in the engine bay from the previous owner. He was the one who bought the exhaust for the car. It must be real.

Re: Is the SLP TOTL too restrictive?
When considering restrictions in an exhaust system, despite headers and decent sized pipes, the muffler is often overlooked in terms of its capacity. Just like a carb a muffler has to flow enough cfm so as not to be restriction.
It's doubtful your SLP or almost any other muffler out there that serves double duty can provide enough cfm to satisfy 400 hp (as an example) before the lack of flow limits power.

Re: Is the SLP TOTL too restrictive?
Most people think that but that is not the case. There were about 4 variations dating way back. And just because a pipe looks a little rusty does not guarantee it is not stainless. Have you ever seen a used set of SLP headers? They can accumulate surface rust even if they are stainless.

Yes I do I will post the pics tomorrow. Just because you havent seen it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I honestly didn't know there were more than what you've seen until about a year ago.

Well I have the pic but they are on my phone and for some reason they aren't coming through to my emails so I can download them to my computer. You could PM ttop350 I got the pics from him. He's kind of an slp guru.

Banks also made a 2OTL system, if i remember it had the oval shapped tail pipes also. i would LOVE to find the banks system. they sound amazing. a kid i went to high school had one on an 84 Z28 305 H.O. sounded tough.
on another note, if it is the Banks system, it will flow very well.

Re: Is the SLP TOTL too restrictive?
Turns out I didn't have a true SLP TOTL. It was just a knock off system. No wonder why I thought it did not perform too well. It was actually a dynomax super turbo 17740.
At least I scored a used cat back SLP exhaust a couple weeks ago for $50. Thought it was a good deal.
Since installing it the sound is amazing. One of the best exhaust sounds I've ever heard. Also, I think it flows pretty well too.

Re: Is the SLP TOTL too restrictive?
I just saw this and as soon as I saw your first picture I was wondering if it was a dynomax cat back.
SLP setups are 409 stainless, which will oxidize on the surface and worse around the welds. I had one fail and break in half from rust at the hanger right after where it goes over the axle.
Is it a restriction... well yes, anything that decreases noise will decrease flow also. Is it a significant one? Well, if you're sub 400hp then I seriously doubt it. The SLP muffler is pretty good, and it's the biggest restriction in the system, so is the dynomax, I'd put them in a very similar category WRT to flow (I think the dynomax is slightly better but the I always thought those tips looked wrong). Going to something like a dynomax ultraflow welded (one of the higher flowing 3" ones) or a similar straight through magnaflow will be probably be worth less than 5hp on a <400hp car. How much a 4" will be worth depends on what the engine combination is like but if the headers/y are sufficient then I doubt you'd gain much by going 4" besides some noise and weight.

SLP used 2-3 types of stainless in the Headers and Exhaust setups.
SLP 2OTL 1st design
I hope you still have the tailpipes and muffler? I'm looking for a set of these tailpipes.
SLP had about 4-5 different muffler style changes during the run.
The Banks exhaust was a totl also but had round chrome tips.

Re: Is the SLP TOTL too restrictive?
Now it all makes sense. So what I had was an original first design of the TOTL. The muffler must have been replaced at some point by a dynomax, but the pipes on either side were reused. Thanks for the help clearing all this up.
Also why the one I just got fit right into the existing I pipe.

They will work just fine on the 3rds but technically, they came out on 4ths.
