Side Pipes

Has anyone ever tried a side pipe set-up for our cars and if so pictures. Also, Has anyone tried the boom tube (nascar) type wide and flat type for ground clearance? The second gen cars like the Motion phase III cars look awesome with side exhaust. Pics if you have them.

This was the set up on my Camaro when I bought it. The pictures are from the Craigslist ad. The guy had a pair of headers on the engine and then used thin flex pipe to route the exhaust to the side pipe intake.

It was terrible. The flex pipe you could put your finger through and they weren't that old. He used that magic heat cement to keep the flange on the flex pipe so it would stay on. The headers came out at an angle where they shot down and the flex pipe wouldn't bend that much. So he used the heat cement on two pieces of flex pipe and made a OVER 90 degree angle. So exhaust was bouncing back into the headers instead of coming out.

Then when it came to the side pipes he just welded a spare piece of metal onto them and used self tapping screws to keep them up. He screwed them into the ground effects/side skirts to keep them up. So it was pretty destructive. The one side pipe fell out and damaged the one side skirt to where I'm going to buy a new one.

The guy used a spark plug wire as a harness to keep the pipe up. He put it under it and slammed the door on the wire to hold it up. So when you opened the passenger door the side pipe would drop down. Definition of ANNOYING.

So in the end they caused a lot of damage to my side skirts. They weren't legal since there wasn't a cat anywhere. I don't think there was even room to put any where he had the flex pipes. The car had a stock suspensions and even so the pipes made ground clearance a pain.

So from my experience I just have a grudge on side pipes. They did look "okay" to the naked eye. But to anyone who knows squat about exhaust would realize they were terrible.

If you can find a way to make them look good AND be functional I say more power to you. But in my experience they sucked!

The side pipe job is what I liked to call a 20/20. Looks good going 20 miles an hour at 20 feet away.

Here is a picture of the damage that happened to my side skirt. Pretty ugly. The one hole is from the screw ripping out. The damage by the tire is even worse.

Re: Side Pipes

Boom tubes have been done, I know of only one and he has a write up on it here. Pretty simple set up he has, search nascar boom tubes on here. Those boom tubes are the only good looking side exit style exhaust I have seen on our cars. Side pipes were not meant to be on the thirdgens.

Re: Side Pipes

Ice9 camari has " Boom tubes" as well as a couple other cars.

Side pipes belong on old corvettes and cobras, that's it IMO.

Sidepipes also equals burned legs.

If the car has gfx, they may suffer damage from the heat as well.

Re: Side Pipes

I have seen some newer cars with the side pipes built in the ground effects. They exit of course at the end with a molded hole. The picture of the red cars side pipes looks poorly engineered but boom tubes I think will be the key with a lot more ground clearance. Need to see pics of someones car with boom tubes and where they hung them.

Re: Side Pipes

That's not really a boom tube. That's just a rectangular side exit in the rocker panel. It's a pretty hardcore setup that requires pretty extensive modification of the frame.

skulte's car had boomtubes, and he never posted very many good pictures of it. He still didnt have enough room for a muffler on it either.

Re: Side Pipes

There was another one here recently, but I can't find it. A camaro that was fully painted up as a NASCAR. They built a boomtube exhaust for it.

Why in the world would you ruin a Camaro doing this?

Re: Side Pipes

Here's mine. Dunno if they would be considered "side pipes" per se, but they are essentially the same thing. I usually refer to them as side dump.
Anyway, these are the best pics I have at the moment. The bottom of the muffler is 1/2" lower than the subframe. They are tucked really tight and I had to relocate the outlets to line up with the channel under the rockers.

These were taken before I put hangars on the pipes so they sit higher now. With side skirts they aren't visible at all.
