no cat in nc?
i live in easter north carolina and they have inspections here and i was wondering would i pass inspection if i removed it off my car here in nc or not?

Sniffer test shouldn't be an issue; only do visual check in Eastern NC as far as I know ( at least in Cumberland County anyway).

Since cats are SO CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP, and modern ones don't create any significant restriction anyway, there's no reason to take it off if it works; and no reason NOT to replace it if it's messed up.

face palms. look not everyone can afford the gass bill of a v 8 and being 19 a v8 would make my insurance skyrocket

A 6-cyl sounds like .... a 6-cyl.
A LOUD 6-cyl sounds like .... any other 6-cyl, except you have to be even farther away from it to keep from being annoyed by it. It's even worse than a loud V8 non-performance exhaust. (think, 305 TBI pickup truck w straight pipes and glasspacks)
Trust me, NOBODY is going to be "impressed" by any kind of "sound" you can get out of a 6-cyl. (except maybe Honduhhh owners with 4-cyls) Just make it work the best that it can, without regard to "sound", (don't advertise that you're economizing on insurance) and bide your time until you can step up into the next higher league.

insurance isn't so bad with a v8 at 19, you've got to remember that the insurance company is gonna look at how old that car is, because of its age they wont give you much for it if its totaled so how could they possibly make you may them so much? and blunt though he may be sofa is right. there isn't any reason to remove your cat. you complain about v8 gas mileage well what do you think will happen to yours if you remove the cat? its gonna get worse. and the car will sound worse, not better.

the reason I removed my cat was to replace with a full new set up flow master save your money and don't half *** It and if just gotta take it off then yes to question it will pass in the state of n.c. its old enough to just have to pass a safety test lights horn etc but if for some reason the v6 lights up check light you will have to find a way to get some o2 cheaters in there

weird thing is the o2 sensor cable came off and isnt hookedu p but the check engine light has never come on but im gona try to save up get a motor and spend time slowly building it with the best parts

and i find out i will never have the money for a shortblock and heads i have no job and most employers dont want to hire me aroudn here cuz of my lack of experience and my bipolar im trying to get into college with grants i wish someone had one justl ieing around i could come pick up so i can slowly rebuild it....

You can find a good used block in a junk yard for probably less than $300.00, complete with accessories and if your lucky, all the wiring.

here in Winston-Salem n.c. I found a lot of 350's for 200 to 300 including trans now finding tpi around here is a needle in a hay stack but possible if go carb 350 itll be easier to set up my opinion I grew up around Camaros with my uncle and we would swap engines all the time but we stuck with carbed engines and there was alittle wiring involved but not as much tinkering ecu and wiring wize as you would think now I was young and a kid but I do remember it didn't take as much as you would think a carbed 350 don't need a lot to run they are one of the most reliable motors chevy made and you can find them anywere that's why there so cheap

You can go to "A friend of a friend"...one of those guys who's shop passes people because he knows them, but they risk being fined upwards of $25000 for illegally passing smog tests for people.

well for one if you live here in north carolina they dont care if you have a carbed motor or a fuel injected one as long as it works properly and nothings tampered wirh and 2 they dont do sniffing tests on cars older than 1996 just a saftey inspection and a visual look over the cat etc.

If you dont mind the work, converting the car to a manual trans will make it a lot more.fun to drive even with just the stock v6.
To comment on an earlier detail, fwiw the 305 tbi cars get better gas milage than tbe v6 cars.

Here in NC you do have to pass the visual, as has been established. It's likely no one will care if there are cats, and no one will care what engine is in there, BUT.....technically.....it's supposed to be in there and original, unless you have all the proper emissions crap etc. etc. ...many mom and pop places just want the car on the property, though they don't even actually inspect it. But again, that's not the "law" per se, so it's up to you what you wanna risk with parts that aren't legal.
....but removing the cat won't do you any favors. Won't affect the sound too much, won't improve flow on a V6. Maybe it's original, and maybe it'd help, but even then....I'd go back with a modern high flow cat. They flow VERY well.
Advice? -buy one of the Motorbooks series books on building a small block chevy, or read Lingenfelter's book on modding small block chevy's. (or Both). SOOOO much valuable, timeless info in those books. Lingenfelter's book references some older part numbers that might not be ideal nowadays, but all the principals and theories are every bit as relevant today as they were back then.
