really need help!

Here's my issue. Say someone bought a roller. No motor trans or exhaust of any kind.

Its and 89 trans an gta.

Is there anyway of knowing if it came with the N10 (dual cat) set up?
I dont have the rpo sticker as i swapped a 4th gen center console in.

I ask because i was looking at getting the hooker 2055 set up and using magnaflow's 36019 universal cat for the 5.7 that came w/o duals.

Is there any way the smog guys can see if it came with the dual cats? Or would i be in the clear?

Im in cali and calling the resource board just ended up with me talking to a very annoying lady that didnt understand what i was asking.

Re: really need help!

Go take it to any inspection place.

They have some way of looking the stuff up that matters, just by the VIN. (might cost a coupla ¢¢ to get em to do that for ya; probably ahelluvalot less than an actual inspection would cost)

If they can't tell the difference, then there is no difference. OTOH if they can look it up, put back on whatever they tell you your VIN shows you should have.

Re: really need help!

What do you think the odds are that they're gonna check? I mean if i show up with my carb #'s all in order and correct for my application. You think they'd just go with it?
Im looking at going with hooker 2055's with a magnaflow 36019 cat. Both california carb approved for my 89 trans am excluding dual cats. But if there's no reason to look for dual cats would they?

I think im just gonna take the chance and go with my idea.

Also are cutouts legal to have? As long as they're after the cat?

Re: really need help!

"Application" = what The Book says the car is supposed to have, according to the VIN.

I can assure you from my time living out there, The Book is pretty damn detailed.

They're gonna check whatever The Book shows the car is supposed to have. If The Book says this car is supposed to have 2 cats, they're going to go all Sesame Street on you, and go "1 .... 2 ..." and if they can't count up to 2 while looking at cats, it won't pass.

BLEE DAT.

That's what they get paid to do.

The only question is, does their Book show that particular detail. I don't know, since I don't have a copy; but if I were the betting kind (which I'm not; I'm, among other things, a college Statistics teacher, so I don't bet on single outcomes unless I'm REAL SURE of them) I would probably bet it does.

But, use some common sense. Instead of asking us here, who DON'T have The Book, go ask Them, who DO have The Book.

Don't outsmart yourself trying to dance around it and evade it, and end up doing more work trying to get out of doing the work than what the work you're trying to get out of doing, actually is; attack the issue at hand head-on.

AFAIK cutouts are not legal, along with any other such modifications to the exh system.

Re: really need help!

so does anyone on here have a way for me to see which exhaust my car came with?

i called just about all my local smog stations. none of them have any idea what im asking.
even the C.A.R.B. hotline didnt want to listen to my question and kept saying...."you cant alter the exhaust blah blah blah." not what im asking.

Re: really need help!

Just look at the RPO code, it should be a label either in your center console or in the trunk storage box.

Re: really need help!

It shouldn't matter either way. Both the dual y pipe cars and the single exhaust cars are the "same car".

Not in CA they're not. One has 1 cat, 1 has 2 cats. Out there, they call that "different".

I never lived near Sacramento; only in So Cal; so I can't tell you where to take it. But SOMEWHERE near you there's going to be an inspection place that will type your VIN into the computer, pull a list of all emissions related stuff, and have a book that show a pic of what they'll be looking for to be sure it hasn't been "tampered". A dealer might even do it for you. Don't expect it for free, but don't expect to have to pay anywhere near a half-hour for em to do it.

Re: really need help!

so anyone think that the average smog shop is going to bust out a 20 year old book to try and debunk my exhaust set up?

im going to be using the hooker 2055's with the magnaflow 36019. both CA legal to be used on an 89 firebird w/o dual cat setups. but nowhere have i found anything telling you how to know w/o either the RPO sticker or the old system.

Re: really need help!

Well when I lived out there in around 2000, they didn't seem to have any trouble at all looking that stuff up for my 74 Caprice 454, over 25 yrs old at the time... Saw it with my own eyes. Little inspection-only shop on Hwy 78 on the east side of Carlsbad.
