Re: Failed Smog, Bad Cat?

Hi,
I just passed ohio emissions with no egr or Air. I have a ramjet intake, vortec heads and a zz4 cam. My readings were 41 ppm HC and 588 ppm NO. I do have a new magnaflow cat. I did tune my engine with an EBL, so my BLMs and AFR are close, but not perfect to 128 and 14.7. You show no engine mods, so your engine must be out of tune. I would check your BLMs and adjust if needed. Nothing else should be needed.

I dont know what an EBL is or BLM or AFR, and how would I tune? and I just found out I had a bad EGR as well I just replaced it but have not taken it in for another test. But im sure it still wont pass with numbers like mine.

Re: Failed Smog, Bad Cat?

EBL is aftermarket ECM used by many people to adjust engine and fuel. Since your engine is mostly stock, its not needed, but would work great if you added headers etc. BLM is Block Learn Mode and can tell you if your engine is rich or lean. You can check it with a good scanner or check if for free by going to Autozone. AFR is Air Fuel ratio and again just tells you if you're engine is rich or lean, but you need more equipment. Since you got your EGR fixed, i would take your car to Autozone to check your BLMs.High BLMs, >128 and your engine lean otherwise <128 and your engine is rich.

Autozone guys did not kno what block lean mode was, I found leaky fuel injectors, replaced put new O-ring kit on thought that would fix. New EGR valve because of code 32 popped up. Now ran it and my numbers were:

15MPH/ HC pmm 55/560 CO% .22/.78 NO pmm 720/1972
25MPH/ HC pmm 60/580 CO% .32/.69 NO pmm 700/2342

I believe this thing will NEVER pass. runs good but can smell little gas out exaust when your face is on it. The guy said I could try taking my Intake manifold off and cleaning all the ports and put new gaskets on it. Any advice on this?

Re: Failed Smog, Bad Cat?

beat the hell out of your engine out of it right before you go. The hotter the cat is the better it cleans. Make sure your AIR tube on your cat is attached at both ends one is a small tube going into the cat and the other end leads into the egr. ALSO new spark plugs, wires and distributor cap. Check your ecm make sure it is an oem ecm and not a aftermarket ecm that lets your car run dirty.
