Magnaflow 16829 Cat-Back Installed Pics + Torched Tips

Hello, I've been a lurker for a few months and I figured I'd start my posting with a thread of my magnaflow I installed a few months back. So my car is a dual cat car with a stock 2.75" intermediate pipe. The only thing I really had to do to the exhaust was take the magnaflow intermediate to a muffler shop so they could open it up a tiny bit (calipurs gave me a 2.71" ID on the magnaflow, and a 2.76" on my stock pipe coming off the cats).

Anyways the exhaust fitment is quite nice, and it shines up really good!

The first attatched pic is the day after I had installed the cat-back. The second pic was probably only a month ago. I got bored one day and only had a few bucks to spare, so I bought a new propane tank for my torch..pulled my exhaust tips off and went to work on the tips to get the rainbow-y burnt titanium effect. Anyways, thanks for looking! I'll probably post up here and there throughout the forums.

I've also got a soundclip video I took: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x61w3PlYsLY

No exhaust mods except for the magnaflow itself, this is on stock exhaust manifolds, y-pipe, and cats.

Great job on the blu-ing. Can you explain the steps you took to achieve that look?

Re: Magnaflow 16829 Cat-Back Installed Pics

Thank you! Yeah it wasn't very difficult at all. Once you remove the tips from the muffler, try to clean as much of the carbon buildup off of the inside of the tips as far back as you want to torch. I only torched about 2 - 2 1/2" back from the tip as you can see. As for cleaning the buildup I believe I used brake cleaner with an old rag.

Then once it's all clean just grab the blow torch and torch the inside of the tip while twisting the tip around in your hand in a clockwise or counter clockwise direction. It's kind of important to realize that it's not going to be perfect all the way around the tip so if you keep trying to heat treat the metal, it could go back to a silver state like when you started. So just try to be precise with your first couple go arounds!

Anymore questions I'd be happy to answer! And good luck to anyone who tries to do this as well!

Excellent. I have heard of people using liquids to help the process. Your method is simple. I believe this only works on stainless steel?

Yeah I've heard the same as well. The only liquid used would've been the brake cleaner for the carbon buildup, and the window cleaner to shine up the pipes after they had cooled off! Just let em' air dry when you're done, or you could dunk them in water I suppose lol.

But yeah stainless is about the only material you can get this effect out of. Besides titanium. Can't say I've seen a third gen around here or a fourth gen for that matter that has torched exhaust tips.

UPDATE: I torched my clamps as well..left one came out good, the right side is a perfect example of what can happen if you torch them too much.

and not to be a big noob or anything, but what exactly sits behind the muffler? whats the large open space on the top of the picture? gas tank? I kinda want to respray that black.

That would be the deepest part of the trunk/hatch of your car, atleast on my car its called a trunk i have a vert... get some black undercoating that makes it look real nice.
