edl-68723 Edelbrock TES Tubular Exhaust System Headers with Ti-Tech Coating

Sup Guys. Does anybody have or had the EDL-67823 Headers and Y-Pipe installed in they're Camaro/Pontiac? If so, was there an improvment in performance, exaust tone?

Re: edl-68723 Edelbrock TES Tubular Exhaust System Headers with Ti-Tech Coating

I have them. Coatings not as great as they claim it to be, mine are already rusting only after about 20 miles on the new motor. if you have the cash go with the full ceramic version. Over all I like them. I use 2 band clamps on the y-pipe, I wouldnt suggest using the pinch clamps that come with the kit.

Also, I looked up for the 2 band clamp that you suggested but there where quite a few of bands that came up on google shopping and images. Can you post a pictures of how it looks so that I can buy one?

That's an interesting question.
I like the headers. They look nice, as does the collector.
Just the Y-pipe looks like it limits flow quite a bit where left and right exhaust route meet.

If the Y-pipe is 2,5", each half of that collector would have slightly less then half of a 2,5" exhaust pipe to travel through.

Surface would be 15.65 cm2 per half.
Some people already find a 2,5" Y-pipe restrictive, but this design really worries me.

Re: edl-68723 Edelbrock TES Tubular Exhaust System Headers with Ti-Tech Coating

I had the old old style [black painted TES] on my 350. It was decent. The lower end felt a little more torquey vs manifolds. There was some seat of the pants feeling changes too. I didn't have the G-Tech Pro at the time so I didn't get before and after 1/4 mile or HP ratings. It surely flowed better than stock due to not having kink bends in the Y pipe.

I had some issues with it continually wanting to blow out donut gaskets I finally just took it apart and went into Autozone and had them bring me every donut gasket they had out. I found some replacements there off some early 90s GMC truck I think.

I think the reason they used 2.5" is the fact that it's probably easier to bend down the stock route than 3". The later years use dual cats you basically get 2.5" into each cat then a Y connection and then your catback which is usually 3". For a 305 or 350 unless you're going power adder or wanting to turn some RPMs I would think these would be fine. My 350 TPI made 211 RWHP 313RWHP through a basically stock motor using these headers (MSD box, air foil, headers, catback, etc). I didn't even bother attempting to run them on the 383 solid roller setup besides just using them for break in.

Re: edl-68723 Edelbrock TES Tubular Exhaust System Headers with Ti-Tech Coating

Ok. I just wanted to hear it from an actual owner. I visited 2 local muffler shops for their opinions of the y-pipe. The collector has the pipes crushed to fit inside the collector so my question to the muffler guys was if this crushing section would be a restriction. They told me no because even if I cut the collector off and round out the bends, the size of the opening would still be the same diameter as the rest of the y-pipe. Keep in mind that my engine is stock. My only mods are cut out airboxes, ported TB, descreened MAF, and a LT1 cam. The muffler guy also said that Edlbrock does play around. He said that the exhaust system is a huge upgrade. The only time that this crushed collector section would effect is if I had a highly modified engine. My main visit to the muffler shop was to question the collector. I thought about cutting out the crushed pipes and welding in plates so that the exhaust could smoothly flow into the collector. But the muffler guys proved me otherwise. What do you think guys?

I see that you know how to calculate numbers. I envy you! I questioned both the collectors on the y-pipe and the headers. But I can say that with my budget and very light wallet, I'm really happy with it over my highly restrictive OEM headers.

Re: edl-68723 Edelbrock TES Tubular Exhaust System Headers with Ti-Tech Coating

I really wouldnt worry so much about the pinched part of the pipe in the Y. Theres a reason for it. First is to increase exhaust flow in to the rest of the system. Also it provides some back pressure to the engine. This not only aids in tuning EFI it also allows the AIR trees at the top of the headers to work. Most importantly the back pressure promote good exhaust scavenging across both banks of cylinders.

Re: edl-68723 Edelbrock TES Tubular Exhaust System Headers with Ti-Tech Coating

"Crushed" part of the pipes is to make it fit with the design. The later models didn't have that issue with dual cats. The collector is a little tighter because it uses donut gaskets. It's a smooth transition for them because there only 2.5". The donut gasket fits on the inside of the Y pipe extension and the header collector to pinch in there to make the seal.

Like I said unless you plan on going power adder for big numbers or high RPMs I wouldn't worry about it. If you do want big power numbers or high RPMs well you're probably going to look at some Dyno Don Headers, Long Tubes, or etc.

If I may add, I have these, but I popped for the ceramic coated. It gives a nice look under the hood.

To me there seems to be more bottom end punch over the stock manifolds. Not as much torque as you would get from a set of long tube headers, but a noticeable improvement none the less.

I had the Edelbrock TES headers on my IROC. Definitely an upgrade from manifolds. Felt a difference in performance and sound. I also ran dual hi perf cats.

I had mine powder coated and they lasted fine unti I sold them.

Next will be a set of Dyno Don's.

with my E.P.P.(experimental parts project) car I had to use headers over oem manifolds, and like the performance gain, but since i forgot to change oil pans, can't seem to fab up a street legal exhaust

Re: edl-68723 Edelbrock TES Tubular Exhaust System Headers with Ti-Tech Coating

Check this out guys. I photoshopped the y-pipe. If I cut out the pinch where the pipes meet and weld a plate, do you think I'll let up on some restriction? I know that there is some pinching on the headers itself at the collector. But do you guys think it would be a good idea?

You could also get a set of hooker 2055's. They have a nice y-pipe!

If didn't have the edelbrocks, I would. But I got the headers for free. So I bought the y-pipe about 4 months ago.

Re: edl-68723 Edelbrock TES Tubular Exhaust System Headers with Ti-Tech Coating

I think welding in a piece like this:

would make more sense.
Hooker has a nice Y-pipe but compared to a "for free' type of bargain they will not come cheap.

Welding in a plate, without leaking exhaust gas will be tricky. The idea is not bad however.

I actually like the way the collectors come together. Could calculate the loss in diaemeter but it will be less significant judging by the pictures.

The exhaust guys referred to are right in one thing, 2x half the 2 1/2" diameter makes 1x 2 1/2" so in that sense it would not appear to make a difference, apart from the fact that our engines do not have evenly spaced exhaust pulses, evenly alternating between left and right.

The uneven order of exhaust pulses between left and right bank can be evened out quite well by a Y-pipe that has 2x 2 1/2" tubes going into one 3". Even 2x 2 1/2" going into one 2 1/2" would work better then the far smaller capacity of the cut-in-half 2 1/2" from Edelbrock.

Do not understand me wrong, it will be better then stock, but still not ideally suited for our engines.

So then the pinch where the tubes meet in the collector should not effect too much then. I just wanna get everthing out in the open so that I can plan my execution without having to remove and redo. As for the exaust system, the headers I got for free. All that I bought was the y-yipe from Summit Racing (Edelbrock 65930 - Edelbrock Y-Pipes). If I had money, I would of gone the Hooker Headers route. But it is what it is.

fiream, how is your exaust hanging under the body? Is it strapped to the tail housing of the tranny?

The car has a factory midpipe, so is uses all the stock rubber hangers. Also the tails are factory too.

Nice Firebird man! Ok. Im gonna have to find a hanger to weld on my mid pipe. I had to cut off the hanger when I dropped the fuel tank. Let me tell you, it was a P.I.T.A. That'll be my next project, install a hanger so that my Edelbrock's wont damage with the wieght.

only other thing was that the ypipe exits right on the bottom of my plastic inner fender well, so you'll need to trim it some.

Why does everyone (well maybe not everyone) post the pictures so large that you need to zoom in so far to view them that the text becomes so small it looks like a straight line. Just saying.

OK if you zoom in on the first pictures in this thread until the whole photo is visible on the screen. The text that goes with it so to small, to read you must zoom out until the picture has only a small amount of it left on the screen.
I can't believe that my computer is the only one this is true on.

I think your either being picky, or your display settings are off. I don't know.

Funny thing is that some people say they are good while others say they are bad. There is another set of bolt one that don't have the pinching. Check it out.

Re: edl-68723 Edelbrock TES Tubular Exhaust System Headers with Ti-Tech Coating

I put this on a friend of mines car many years ago. The headers are eh, ok for a driver I guess. The Y pipe sucks, I have put on 3 replacements because of it completely rusting out. We even shipped one off to have coated and it STILL rusted out and fell apart. It rusted under the coating inside and out. We got all the replacement Ypipes from Eldelbrock.

Just a quick FYI to the poster that said the E-Ypipe crimp helps keep some back pressure in the motor.
Back pressure is BAD, this is a 4 stroke motor not a 2 stroke. Carry on.
